The coffee table is often the center of attention in our living rooms and family rooms.  It's a spot that so many want to get just right.  Especially since hours can be spent around that rectangle, square, or round low table. I've had many readers say, "Please help!" Because they just don't know what to put on their coffee table... besides a cup of coffee.  The idea of "styling" that focal point is intimidating. And for some reason... many feel the decorating pressure to create a perfect fall coffee table. After all... fall decor is coming close to pushing Christmas off that first place … [Read more...]

Who flipped the switch? Every morning I'm up by 6 am... starting the day's race in the kitchen by making lunch and breakfast. It's early... but the only light I turn on is over the kitchen sink.  It's plenty of light. Or at least it WAS! What happened? Fall doesn't officially arrive until September 27th. Unofficially... Fall arrived... with her entourage of heavy gray clouds, cool temperatures, brisk wind, dark early mornings, and early sunsets. If you've been following me on Facebook you no doubt know my thoughts. Several gals overwhelmingly responded that … [Read more...]

What do you know about the psychology of color?   House to Home I've heard that grocery stores and boutiques paint their walls so that we'll want to buy more and restaurants choose colors that will make us hungry.  Oh my! No wonder we get into so much trouble spending too much money and eating too much food. We all have our favorite colors. Usually if you ask me I'll say that my favorites are yellow and red.  However, in my home decor I will put together green rooms or blue rooms and my winter walking parka is a lovely shade of sage green.  So I guess I'm not a single … [Read more...]

Oh my goodness!  I had so much fun last weekend. There's an antique fair in our area that boasts they have 400 vendors.  That's a lot of booths. And we saw it all! Okay... we did not inspect every single item.  But, we passed by every booth with eagles' eyes hoping to find something extraordinary. And we were not disappointed. These chairs were so cute!  Of course I want to sit and read a book on the Adirondack chaise.  Isn't it wonderful? And the others are so chippy and sweet and perfect for the garden. And who would have thought... that when you've run the wheels off your scooter... … [Read more...]

Fourth of July is probably my favorite holiday to celebrate.  More likely, it's the height of summer and I want a reason to party and celebrating our country's independence is the perfect excuse.  Then again, what other holiday has flags to wave...  or even a theme, design, and colorway all its own? Today I thought I would put together a few ideas to help you throw your own 4th of July bash... simply, beautifully, and easily.   Most parties are all about the food. But, I confess... I am usually about the presentation. The two can easily be melded together.  The key is to have fun prepping … [Read more...]

It all started with some branches from a flowering tree in our yard. One of the most lovely surprises you can have in a new-to-you home is the discovery of flowering trees and bushes.     We had no idea what this white blooming beauty was, but the branches were many and heavy laden with blossoms, so I decided to cut a few and bring them inside. I will have to say, the blossoms did not have the most pleasing fragrance.  But, their beauty was spectacular.   Today I want to give you a little inspiration, so you too, can create a vignette with flowering branches.   My … [Read more...]

Today is a special day for An Extraordinary Day!   To begin... let's go back a few years.  After losing my job in 2009, I suddenly had more free time than I was accustomed to having.  So as I was preparing to host a fall open house for my Longaberger business, I decided to go online and do a little exploring for fall decorating ideas. Spending time online was not new to me, quite the contrary.  Usually I spent my time online researching things for children's ministry, or nutrition.  Important stuff. [wink] I had never even thought about exploring the interwebs for home decor ideas.  That bright fall day … [Read more...]

I received the same Ball® Jars being given away.  All opinions are my own.   Did you know that I absolutely LOVE mason jars? Back before they were popular, my aunt, when downsizing gave me a few boxes filled with vintage Ball® jars.  I thought it was the best gift ever, and used them to decorate my sweet saltbox.  Several moves later, the jars were popping up all over the place and I found them among my boxes and started using them here and here. As much as I love those vintage Ball jars, my heart would pitter-patter whenever I spied an amethyst or purple mason jar.  However, I never saw one in … [Read more...]

You might roll your eyes at this super easy tip.  It's like, Duh! Ah... but don't be so quick. I didn't learn this tip until I'd been keeping house for close to ten years. One day I was in the office and a volunteer popped in.  She said she was off to clean someone's house.  It wasn't something she usually did, but the pay was amazing and the job was easy.  She went on to say that the lady of the house evidently wiped down her bathroom sinks every day, so they were quick to clean. I'm sure you wipe down your bathroom sinks every day.  Right? Well, that wasn't the case at my house. My … [Read more...]

Recently I  did a little thrift and antique store hopping with my good friend.  We had so much fun. One thing Rochelle collects is vintage aluminum trays.  They're inexpensive, they don't take a lot of storage space, and they can be used for all sorts of things. Serving beverages? Grab a tray.  Serving appetizers? Use a tray.  Serving several kinds of ice cream for a sundae bar? A tray makes a great slop-proof surface. And then my favorite... using a tray to frame a moment (vignette).     After shopping with my friend, we went to her house and played.  Do you do that too?  She … [Read more...]

As the seasons change, I like to feather my nest in small but big ways.  Creating little vignettes in the areas where we live, or major traffic areas in the house go a long way to making our homes and their inhabitants feel loved.  Today I have 5 easy steps to help you make a spring vignette. How to Put Together a Simple Spring Vignette.     First... Choose a theme for your vignette. Because we're so anxious for spring after a long cold winter and because we also want to give a nod to St. Patrick's Day, today we've chosen a green and white theme for our little vignette.  Color … [Read more...]

How would you like to breathe new life into your home decor?  A quick and easy lampshade makeover can brighten your room, infuse it with color, or update your look.  Sometimes, it really is just that easy to freshen up a room.     Don't you love it when you come across a deal that's perfect for a project on your to-do list? One day I went to Lowe's on a mission. Of course, as long as I was there I just had to stroll down the lighting aisles. Even if I don't have a need, I just love to see, what's new in lighting.  That particular day, I noticed boxes of white lampshades in the aisle. … [Read more...]
