The One who spoke this world we know into existence.... He humbled Himself,     obedient to death—     a merciless death on the cross! Philippians 2:8 The Voice ...for you...and me. This perfect One... took that which was ours....every ugly sin and wrong thing we have ever done. So we wouldn't have to experience the punishment we deserve. It's Friday.... Jesus' followers did not know, as they watched him die this cruel death on the cross at the hands of the Roman soldiers, that this was not the end. Sure...he told them they would see him again.  But that just didn't make any sense. … [Read more...]

Love. Those four letters make a really BIG word. Seriously...when we're dating love seems easy.  Later when we get married...sometimes love isn't so easy. And then there's that co-worker.  You know the one.  Seriously...who could love someone with that attitude? Or what about the neighbor whose dog leaves presents in your front yard, for you to step in, every day. We're supposed to love those people. “I give you a new command: Love each other. You must love each other as I have loved you. All people will know that you are my followers if you love each other.” John 13:34-35 NCV What's … [Read more...]

How many times has a good friend asked you how you were and you found yourself telling her some of your troubles? It's something we all do...especially when that friend is someone whom we trust. I don't think letting someone know that you're struggling with your child, or your job, or your health is a bad thing.  Not at all.  In fact, unless I know that you're dealing with something that needs prayer....I can't pray specifically about it for you.     Do you think it would make any difference if instead of talking about our troubles, we would tell people about our joys? You're at … [Read more...]

It's not what you think. No. It's much worse. The "s" word you're thinking of pales in comparison to the "s" word I have on my mind.   The "s" word on my mind....is deplorable...appalling....despicable Especially in 2014. Yet....there are more than at any other time in history. Unimaginable. Why should there be even one?   What am I talking about? Slaves. Human trafficking is modern day slave trade. There are lots of words that people use to make it sound more palatable. But that doesn't change the reality. And one more thing. It isn't over … [Read more...]

Yesterday, Ann Voskamp's blog post hit my inbox. As I was reading through the post I came across these words... When you’re overwhelmed with the goodness of God to you — you overflow with the goodness of God to others. Ann Voskamp  I had to ask myself this question... Are you overwhelmed with the goodness of God Maybe you'd like to join me in contemplating this question and Ann's statement. Thank you for stopping by today.   How do you celebrate Valentine's Day? Usually my husband and I choose to make a lovely dinner together and I decorate the table in a way fitting for the day.  We have been doing this for several years.  It really is more fun than going out.  And more economical, even if we splurge for special menu items or ingredients.     This time of year we are inundated by offers from jewelers and florists and chocolate shops.  At our house, we don't place any pressure on exchanging gifts and cards, but if we choose to give a gift, it probably will be in an unexpected kind of way.  One year my … [Read more...]

Quite a few years ago my husband and I were browsing a sweet little book shop in downtown Holland, Michigan at Christmas time. We could spend hours there.  Tim, who is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, picked up a full-sized softcover book with the most amazing illustrations, Letters From Father Christmas. I was busy that year and though Tim encouraged me to read it, I never got around to it.  But, year after year, I stacked it up along with an assortment of Christmas books on the blanket chest we used for our coffee table. Then, for some reason, I sat down.  Um.  Generally I never sat down before Christmas … [Read more...]

On this day officially proclaimed as the day to gather together to give thanks to our Great and Holy God... Let us do just that. Let us join with the Psalmist here... Thank God! He deserves your thanks. His love never quits. Thank the God of all gods, His love never quits. Thank the Lord of all lords. His love never quits. Thank the miracle-working God, His love never quits. The God whose skill formed the cosmos, His love never quits. The God who laid out earth on ocean foundations, His love never quits. The God who filled the skies with light, His love never quits. The sun to … [Read more...]

If you would enjoy framing this quote, please download the free printable here and save it to your desktop for printing or take it to your favorite photo shop.   Do you have a thankful heart? Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be so blessed regardless of their circumstances? The unthankful heart... discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings! Henry Ward Beecher Isn't this a great quote?   One other thing I've noticed...those with a thankful heart are … [Read more...]

It's confession time. Do you ever let your feathers get ruffled by something someone has done or said? When was the last time your feathers were ruffled?     I looked out my window the other day to see a gathering of bluebirds around the bluebird house at the end of the driveway.  It's seems to be rather late in the season for birds to be checking out houses.  But, that's exactly what these birds appeared to be doing.  In and out they went. With hope in my heart, I grabbed the camera, just knowing that today, I would finally be able to snap some shots.  And yes!  I got a few. It was … [Read more...]

When my world gets turned upside down, I love to go on a nature walk. This quote by Sara Moss-Wolfe says it all. Nature is my medicine.   Maybe you are like me.... Back in my old stomping grounds, it's tulip time. It's a fabulous celebration of tulips and things Dutch.   The funny thing is, usually before or after the big shin dig I'd drive over to see the tulip displays and fields of tulips.  But, I never attended the parade or any of the festivities.  I have a slight regret.  When you live in an area most of your adult life, you think you're going to have plenty of time to 'get there.'  After all, we had built our 'forever house.'  We lived in one of the loveliest places in the country, a true vacation destination, of course there would be plenty of … [Read more...]

Watching the setting sun and seeing the colors dance, refract, and saturate melts away the cares of the day.  Late in the afternoon, we went for a walk.  From one end of town to the other.  We live almost at the end of our road.  Just as we rounded the corner to our house I happened to look back and see the sky coloring.  We proceeded a bit further, hoping to get a good look at the setting sun.  And maybe a few pictures.  Without telephone poles and wires marring the magical moment.   Peace is seeing a sunset and knowing who to thank.   Isn't it lovely? I don't know about you, but … [Read more...]
