Day 3
Last Friday night we were invited to the home of some new friends for dinner. We had the best time.
When was the last time you asked someone over for dinner?
All this month we’re exploring how to live an extraordinary life.
When we live life to the full we do things outside our comfort zone. We do crazy things like carve time out of our busy schedules to spend with friends. We clean the house, decide on a menu, figure out what to do with the pets, or even the kids…just so we can invite new or old friends to dinner.
When was the last time you asked someone over for dinner?
October is a gloriously beautiful month. Just three days in…there’s still plenty of time to get some entertaining in. Outside. Yup. October dining Just think of the memories that will be created by enjoying an October meal outside. The air is crisp, the leaves are starting to fall….let’s go outside. If you live in northern half of the United States, like me, we pretty much won’t have much choice but to spend the next four months inside. So…let’s forget about being ordinary….let’s be extraordinary and invite some friends for a meal….outside!
Ask guests to dress for outdoor weather. Have fun setting up the table in the midst of fallen leaves. Mother Nature makes the little bit of table decorating you choose to do, easy. Whatever the time of day….light candles to help create a warm and cozy feeling. Choose simple foods that are warm and hearty like soups and breads, or something rustic like shepherd’s pie. Be sure to serve warm beverages, too.
After the meal, it’s always fun to gather everyone around a fire. Who doesn’t like roasting marshmallow and eating gooey s’mores?
Just think of the memories that will be created by enjoying an October meal outside. And if we dine outside…we don’t have to clean the house like a crazy person (okay…that’s just probably me who does that). Plus…the meal can be more simple too. And if guests ask to bring something. Don’t be like me….ahem. Let them.
So are you in? Are you ready to do something extraordinary in October?
I’m pretty sure our guests will all go home saying, “Now, that WAS fun!!”
Why be ordinary when you can be extraordinary?
Wishing you An Extraordinary 31 Days!!

Love the tablecloth. A great starting off point. Your pumpkin for the center is perfect. So warm and welcoming. xo marlis
Hi Marlis! This was a fun post to put together. My friend and I had some time while our husbands worked on a reseeding project at her home. I asked her if we could do a table setting. It was a lovely day so we went outside. It was so much fun. Glad you like it! Thanks for popping by!
Wow, I LOVE this table!! And I like your way of entertaining. Love the outdoors and enjoying the beautiful weather. And YES let them bring cake!!
Thank you Jocelyn!! There is something extra special about Fall outdoor entertaining. I think it might be the lighting (I notice things like that – teehee) and that it seems so fleeting. Summer seems to last and be constant…not Fall.
Happy Fall to you!
Pretty fall place setting! How nice would it be to dine outdoors in the fresh fall weather!
Thanks Kathy!! It is fun. At the very least we should take a picnic….I love those too!!!
Happy Fall!
Oh, how I love your pumpkins! I cannot imagine eating outside where you are, but here in the South, it’s more of a possibility. Although, today is very cold – much like Northern temperatures! Anyway, you table is beautiful and inspiring. As always, I enjoyed everything about your post. 🙂
His blessings to you and yours!
Kim
Thanks Kim!! You know…we can get some lovely Indian summer days in the upper 60’s. On those days…it’s time to cease the moment and enjoy the weather. A bowl of soup and heart bread makes for a great, but simple, outdoor meal. Hope you’re enjoying your cooler weather. Here we’re about 40 degrees. That’s too cold for me when there’s gusty winds too. Brrr. There are flurries in the forecast as well. But, we have great springs and summers and early falls!!!! I’ll major on the good stuff. ‘Cause I for sure would melt and never get anything done in your summer heat. 😉
What kind of stainless steel flatware is that. I had some a very long time ago and have been looking for some with three-tined forks ever since…
Phyllis…I did this tablesetting at my friend’s home using her silverware. But, Oneida used to make a three tine forks…maybe they still do. I’ve always loved them too.
Blessings!
Thanks so much 🙂
Thank you for stopping by Phyllis!
Hope your day is Extraordinary!!
