Praise God for this incredible, unbelievable, indescribable gift!
Most days are filled with the common, the ordinary, nothing spectacular happens. And we just keep rolling along in a field of gray.
As I write this on Christmas Eve just a little more than an hour before the 11 p.m. service at church, I’m reminded that incredible moments come in the midst of pain and ordinariness. Early this morning I awoke with a terrific pain in my stomach. I am pretty sure it was that glass of egg nog cut with some Vernor’s, in addition to the chocolate truffle I enjoyed earlier in the day. After some time, I decided that I needed to get up and drink a glass of tepid water.
I was drawn to the kitchen window, where the wind was howling something fierce. As I lifted the blinds, I realized that though it was the middle of the night, the moon was illuminating the waves on the lake. It appeared to be a sea of white foam glinting in the moonlight. I felt drawn to walk the beach. So, back to bed I went, trying to decide if I should awaken my husband, or not. I brushed my finger on his shoulder hoping he would awake and soon he did. He wanted to know if I was okay. I told him about my stomach which was feeling better and how beautiful the water was and he said, “Do you want to get up and walk the beach?” Wonder how he knew?
Minutes later we were dressed, arm in arm, leaning into the strong winds, and walking the beach in moon shadows. The wind and waves had carved the sand into interesting patterns. We had to watch our step as the beach was far from flat. Every few minutes we would stop and watch the water… foam and crash into the shoreline sending sheets of water creeping close to where we stood some twenty or thirty yards inland from where it usually laps. The moon so bright it was if it were approaching dusk and not the middle of the night. And then briefly it would slip into the shadows of the clouds. Off on the horizon we could see hundreds of beautiful white breakers illuminated by the moon’s light.
Alone on the beach, wind and sand in our face and hair, eyes open to see and experience what the sleeping world had missed.
And in some very small way… is it not like the night when the angels came to visit the shepherds with the Good News?
There we were in the wee hours, taking in the beauty that few would see, touching God through nature, filling our spirits with glimpses of his beauty and power. Filled with gratitude for this gift that came through a stomach ache.
A few thousand years previous… the shepherds experienced a personal visit from God’s messengers… meeting the Messiah… all things glorious… in the middle of the night.
And we, like the shepherds, went home, praising God for what we had seen.
Only ours is just a glimpse of glory… the shepherds were able to bow down to the most amazing glorious gift ever.
God became man and dwelt among us so that we would be able to see his glory and know his love and learn the way to be with him forever.
Praise God for this incredible, unbelievable, indescribable gift!
