What colors elicit the feeling of Spring for you?

Yellow is one of my favorite colors, so when the Daffodils begin blooming, it’s like I see happiness popping up all over my world.

French Provincial Yellow White & Blue Tablescape :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Several years ago as I was going through my parents’ cupboards….you know the way-up-high kitchen storage that once an item goes up there, no one ever sees again?   That’s where I found this yellow Crocus planter.  As I was trying to decide what to put together without spending a dime, I remembered that bright yellow pot I had taken home with me.  It was the starting place for this yellow, blue, and white tablescape.

Provincial Styled Table Setting :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

I love the mix of modern and vintage, here.  The Crocus planter looks very contemporary, yet, I’m guessing that it is from the 40’s, maybe earlier.  My dinnerware is Longaberger Woven Traditions, the vintage flatware was my grandmother’s, the cobalt goblets were a special discovery, and the provincial styled table linens came from my favorite small shop in Grand Haven, Michigan, back when I lived in the mitten state.  A very eclectic mix.

What makes it all work is the color theme of yellow, blue, and white.

A vintage doily holds down the centerpiece and is encircled by a light and airy wreath in our color scheme.

In the center of the Crocus pot, which I filled with small river pebbles, are some silk Daffodils.  Instead of flowers poking up through the small outer holes I decided to do something a bit more whimsical.   Blown eggs in white and dyed blue are set on the openings.  (Just to make sure they don’t fall off, I used a bit of sticky tack to secure them.)  Isn’t it fun?  Perfect for the season.

Cobalt Blue in a Spring Tablescape :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

You’ll notice that on top of each napkin is a miniature cobalt blue covered chicken dish.  One of these is vintage.  The other I picked up for just a few dollars when I lived in Indiana.  I have no idea which is which any longer, nor do I know if the tops and bottoms are properly married.  Oh well.

I think it would be really fun to have a large version of the cobalt covered chicken dish to use in a centerpiece.  Wouldn’t it be stunning with the miniatures?

Since we live a long way from family, I have set this rustic work table for just the two of us in the sunroom.   We save the traveling for summer when we can enjoy wiggling our toes in the sand and walking along the shores of the Big Lake.

Since I am on a spending freeze, I am challenged to create a pretty table setting for Spring and Easter with what I have in my stash.  Yes, I am grateful to have some very lovely things.  Yet, how many times do we find ourselves putting together a table setting thinking that we need fresh flowers, or this or that little cute thing to make it perfect?   I want to encourage you to play with what you have and see just what you might be able to put together without running off to the store.  If you do end up at the store…that’s fine.  The exercise is in working creatively with what we have, first.

Yellow, white, and blue.  One of my favorite color combinations.  Cheerful, bright, and crisp…with a handful of whimsy thrown in for good measure.

Look! The winter is past.
The rain is over and gone.
Blossoms appear in the land.
The time of the songbird has arrived.
The cooing of the mourning dove is heard in our land.

    Diane,
I just love what you have done with yellow, white & blue! The tiny hens-on-a-nest are a delight! A very good find indeed!
I also love the idea of thrift that you have. Nearing retirement, & just because I don’t like to pay bookoodles for anything, I am in your clan!
May God continue to bless you, inspire you & provide in surprising ways on your journey. Fond compliments.

    • Diane says

Thank you Carolyn. 😀 Your warm and encouraging words just put a big smile on my face. [hugs]

  2. Glenda Kremer says

Diane this is so beautiful and as I looked at your pictures today I have an idea for you. surely you have thought of it! let me start by telling you about a friend of mine who took my daughter’s family picture which turned out so good that my daughter Kristi told Jill she should start a photography business which she did. you can check her out if you like—-www.inhisimagejillallisonphotography—–I hope I got that right. well she now has a great photography business going. with all your beautiful photography I think you should do the same! guessing your hubby still looking for job as I have read nothing recently about his getting one??? hope I just missed it and he is working! that is my prayer!
    hugs
    Glenda

    • Diane says

Hi Glenda! It is so good of you to stop by today. Thank you too for your concern about our jobless situation…we are still trusting God for his provision. 🙂 He is good…all the time.
I’m humbled that you think so well of my photography. All my pics are taken with a Nikon pocket camera…can you imagine showing up to take photos with that. People would be looking around wondering where the real cameras are. 🙂 I’m hopeful that God will make a way to get a ‘real’ DSLR camera someday. In the meantime…I’ll keep on, trusting that I’m still practicing my craft.
Joy & Blessings to you my friend.

  3. You brighten every corner of our house!

    • Diane says

And I’ve an ear-to-ear grin on my face. 😀
      [hugs]

  4. This tablescape is so gorgeous, love blue and yellow, you had some lovely things in your stash! xo

    • Diane says

Barbara…the benefit of having been an only child is an interesting ‘stash.’
Thank you for stopping by and your sweet compliments.
May your day overflow with joy and blessing.

  5. I’d say you did pretty well with what you’ve got… it’s simply lovely!

  6. Gail says

I am with you sister, decorate with what you already have, stretches one’s imagination and creativity. What’s creative about buying and displaying a mass produced, premade seasonal decor?

    • Diane says

      Ahhh….well said!
      Hope your day is Extraordinary!

  7. You have done a tremendous job, Diane, of sharing beautiful creations without spending money. It is such a great reminder to simplify! I do have to be very careful with my “creative” budget too since most of our finances go to our children’s needs. I also enjoy shopping my house and have gained such inspiration from you. Thank you!

    • Diane says

You are so kind and encouraging Jessica! I can’t say it’s fun to be forced to simplify and be ‘get’ creative. But, on the other hand, it has been really good for me. We so often look at things in the same way….it’s good to get outside of our little thinking boxes, so to speak. Creativity tools cost a lot, and I have plenty. It’s time for me to utilize what I have and the lovelies I inherited from my parents. It blesses me to think that you are being inspired as a result. Yay God!

  8. Jenna says

Very pretty Diane, your mats and napkins are so cute and different! The centerpiece is adorable, what a fun idea!

  9. What a beautiful color combination! And that centerpiece is stunning. I can’t wait until I see daffodils in our yard – after the 2′ of snow melts, that is. Found you at ‘Memories by the Mile.’

    • Diane says

I’m so glad you like it. It really is one of my favorite color combos. I think those daffys are going to be a while…2 feet of snow. Yuck!!
Stay warm and think Spring!! 🙂

  10. That is a gorgeous tablescape.

    • Diane says

      Awwww…thanks Jessica!!
      Hope your week is Extraordinary!!

  11. Carol says

Your table setting is just beautiful. I love the placemats, napkins and of course, the color scheme.

    • Diane says

      How nice of you to say that Carol! Thank you! {hugs}

  12. So lovely! Looks like a special morning at a relaxing B & B!! And I agree about a photography business for you. Your photos are awesome! How about opening a shop on Etsy? I notice you often apologize for your camera… stop, please. 🙂 You are able to do extraordinary things with that camera!

  13. A beautifully set table makes the whole house seemed dressed up! I love the blue colors. I am still waiting for the daffodils to bloom here…soon, I hope!

    • Diane says

I think it will be a while before the daffy’s bloom here, too, Tracey!
      Thank you!! 🙂

  14. What a beautiful tablescape! I agree with you that the colors of blue, white, and yellow looks fabulous together. I especially love your cobalt blue covered chicken dishes. Very creative to put them on the plates!

    • Diane says

Awww thanks for your encouraging thought Melanie!
      Hope your day is Extraordinary!

  15. Your Spring tablescape is so pretty and cheerful! Blue and yellow is always a lovely combination. I just added Spring to my dining room today with some pretty yellows, and it really brightened things up inside! (even though it’s like 35 degrees outside, yikes!)
    Blessings,
    Leslie

    • Diane says

Maybe that’s why the yellow is so appealing…the still freezing temps make us yearn for anything warm….even color. 🙂
I’m looking forward to warmer weather and Spring!! 🙂
Thank, Leslie for you kind words!

  16. Judy says

Beautiful, so love the blues and yellows together. The little blue chicken pieces are so cute.

    • Diane says

Awww thanks Judy! I love those sweet ladies too!

  17. Babs says

Your blue, yellow and white tablescape is so fresh and pretty and I really like the design on your placemats and napkins. Cute cobalt nested hens, too. I know what you mean about “shopping the house” to make a vignette or tablescape. I “shop” my house a LOT.
    Visiting from A Delightsome Life.
    Babs

    • Diane says

Oh Babs….every. thing. you do is always beautiful! Thanks you for your sweet and encouraging words. 🙂
      Wishing you an extraordinary week!

  18. Yellow and blue are a fave of mine!
Thanks for linking your lovely table to Let’s Dish!

    • Diane says

Can’t beat those two colors for spreading a bit of Spring cheer!
Hope your week is Extraordinary Kathleen!

  19. I love blue and yellow together, and daffodils are my favorite! It looks like you set this table just for me! Thank you!

    • Diane says

Oh Hope….I would love it if you could come and sit down at the table with me. We’d have quite a chat. 🙂
      Wishing you an extraordinary day!

  20. Yellow and blue is always a favorite.. Your eclectic mix is a inner. I love the linens, the dishes, and the centerpiece. Just love your style.. Happy Spring!! xo marlis

  23. Karee says

    Karee

    • Diane says

      Awwww….thank you Karee! 🙂
      Wishing you an Extraordinary weekend!

  24. Diane says

Oh, what you did with the eggs on the Crocus pot is so creative and your blue and yellow is wonderful. I cannot believe that those beautiful goblets were found at Big Lots, although, I have found some great things there over the years. Your placemats and napkins really set the mood for this table. Thanks for sharing!

    • Diane says

You are the first person to comment on the eggs on the Crocus pot. Thank you! 🙂 To me they create just the right amount of whimsy. Guests always think those goblets are really special. I think that makes it even more fun. 🙂
Wishing you a day overflowing with blessings, Diane!

  25. Dear Diane,
Your table looks beautiful. Those are the colors of my house and always soothing and pleasing together. Love your old yellow pot. It’s a treasure and the photo of the blue glass with the eggs reflected in it, is fabulous.
    Ruthie from: http://www.ladybstimefortea.blogspot.com

    • Diane says

Awww Ruthie…you said the nicest things.
I had a kitchen that had that lovely mingling of color….and it was the happiest of all my kitchens ever.
      Hope your day is Extraordinary!

  26. What an absolutely lovely tablescape! Yellow and blue are classic and for good reason. Some things just need to be left alone, because they can’t be improved upon.

I just switched from a Nikon Cool Pix to a dslr. So far, I’m not seeing much difference, but that’s just because I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m learning. The Nikon is almost just as good as the dslr for close ups. I think it’s when you’re at a distance the point and shoot falls short. So…for tablescapes, you’re good, as evidenced by your beautiful pics!

Thank you for putting a smile on my face this morning!

    • Diane says

Doreen….thank you for your encouragement. It really means a lot.
You are right the Nikon CP is great for close ups and scenery. It’s the mid-range that challenges me. And I do wish that when I did close-ups that the background would fade away and not be so sharply in focus. Regardless…I am blessed to have such a nice pocket camera. Truly. 🙂
May I ask what you chose for your new camera? Are you thinking about taking one for online photo classes like the one offered from The Lettered Cottage?
      Wishing extraordinary JOY today!

  27. Doni says

OH WOW Diane! such a pretty table!! I love that color combo too, but what stands out to me and my heart flutter was the cobalt blue! I have one of those little blue chicken pieces and just placed her in my kitchen window. I may need to try to do a table scape for spring and you have inspired me! Thank you so much for joining me for my party!!
    Blessings,
    Doni

    • Diane says

Haha! That’s exactly where one of my little chickies was hanging out prior to gracing the table. 🙂 I am blessed that this might inspire you. Oh I hope that you share your lovely creation on your beautiful blog. 🙂
Thank you for your warm and encouraging words today, Doni!

  28. Found your site from Talkin’ About Thursday…This is wonderful! I’m always complaining that so much spring decor just isn’t bold enough for my taste, but your table is bold, beautiful and fantastic! I shared you on google plus, pinned you, and now I’m your newest follower!
    Thanks so much for sharing!

    • Diane says

Oh my goodness Rosie….you just put the biggest smile on my face. Thank you so much!!
      You are extraordinarily sweet. [hugs]

  29. We were on the same wavelength this week, choosing daffodils and shades of blue! I enjoyed reading the story behind the different elements you included in setting this pretty table. Those placemats and napkins are gorgeous — and would fit in perfectly at MY house!

    • Diane says

Oh Tricia, isn’t that fun! I think the gloomy skies were what drew my eyes to think yellow for sure!
Thank you for your sweet comments. 🙂
      Wishing you an Extraordinary day!

    hugs,
    Linda

  40. So lovely! I love the blue chicken covered dishes – so cute for Easter. I have the same Longaberger plates. We use them all the time but I love that they are durable and they still look great when I want to set a fancy table!

    • Diane says

Thank you Jill! It was so fun to put this table together. 🙂 That’s what I love about the Longaberger Dinnerware…it looks casual or dressy. Sure makes life easier!
      Hope your weekend is extraordinary!!

  41. Sarah says

I’m a fan of blue and yellow and this table setting is 5 stars for certain. Your linens are sheer delight and perfect for this table. What fun to have the bright yellow croton vase from your parents.
Thumbs up to your goal of using what you have. I’m all for doing that too. I recently hosted my garden club for lunch. With 40 guests, I needed to set up lots of small tables about the house and out on the terrace. Rather than buy flowers for each individual table, I used containers and my spheres of preserved boxwood. They were a hit! Something different and unexpected and no added cost.

    • Diane says

Oh Sarah, I love how you made your tables beautiful for your garden club guests. Isn’t it more fun when we get our creative juices flowing?!!
Thank you for popping over and for leaving such sweet and encouraging words.
      Wishing you an Extraordinary weekend!

  42. The real voyage of discovery consists of not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”
    – Marcel Proust
I agree- use what you have, see them in new ways. 🙂

I love that quote!! It fits my new way of thinking….looking with new eyes.
Thank you for taking the time to share that lovely quote.
      Hope your day is extraordinary!

Debi and Charly @ Adorned From Above

    • Diane says

Thank you Debi & Charly for your kind words and for your warm invitation. 🙂 I will add the ‘hop’ to my diary.

  45. Hi, Diane! I would not have known that was a crocus pot. I have never heard of that in my sheltered little life! It’s cute, though! And it offers endless possibilities for future use! Fun what we can often find stashed away in the recesses of our parents’ homes! You did a good job of using what you have to create a table the 2 of you can enjoy. I love the little chicken pots! They’re a great detail touch!

I have been on a self-imposed (OK….maybe not so much SELF-imposed!) spending hiatus, too. I have been blessed with many wonderful things, and this gives me the opportunity to really stretch and use what I have. One thing I DON’T have these days is a budget for lots of fresh flowers on a whim. I have a nice stash of silks that work out just fine for the purpose of simple tablescaping. Since we’re not doing much entertaining these days, no worries! Relative poverty has a way of really making us get creative, doesn’t it? 🙂

Best wishes to you and your husband for a wonderful Easter week! (Visiting from The Home Girl’s blog party.)

    • Diane says

You are so sweet Alycia! Spending hiatuses aren’t fun until we make them fun I’m learning. 🙂 And really, are we not wealthy in the world’s eyes? Being grateful and learning to see things differently may actually be the best blessing. Of course, it is a constant exercise to “think on these things” — but what a lovely result. (For me I’m also learning there’s nothing like writing and speaking truth to cement it in my mind.)
Thank you for taking the time to hop over and leave your thoughtful words.
      May your day be extraordinary!!

  46. Susan says

Such a pretty and spring like tablescape you have designed while the snow is still on the ground in your neighborhood. Have a blessed Easter.

    Big Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

    • Diane says

Thank you Susan and Bentley! Now if that ol snow would just take a hint!! heehee! 🙂

  47. Linda says

    PINNED!

  48. What a lovely table you have put together! I love that you have pulled from your stash of things, rather than run to the store for something new. I love how you creatively used the crocus bowl and the little hen dishes are darling!

    • Diane says

You words are uch a tremendous encouragement to me this morning. Thank you soooo much Laurie!!!
      Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!

  49. Mel says

Wow…. I really like the blend of old/new/textures and patterns. And of course I like the yellow and blue. Mostly I like that you bother when it’s the two of you. *sigh* I’m guilty of ‘it’s just US’…..I drug out the bunnies and chickies I had within reach (LOL) and scattered ’em around–cuz a small child was coming and she would enjoy ’em. NOT cuz we’d enjoy ’em…even though we both do. I simply didn’t go to the effort until you tossed in the wee child.
Yes, I’ll go to the naughty corner. LOL Actually, what I’ll do is work on that ‘you, too can make a simple banner’ instead of letting it sit in the box, growing dust bunnies. Oh man……I’ll have to ask myself when THAT happened–cuz I love dragging things out and making things festively decorated.
Come to think of it–the wreath still has red and green lights on it.
    *hanging head*
    Oy brother…..

    • Diane says

My dear friend…you put a smile on my face! 😀
Let me tell you, from my ‘vast’ experience, 🙂 that when you get thrown knuckle balls, it’s like Charlie Brown flying through the air, everything turns upside down. I am so grateful for this little blog. It helps me to keep stepping forward. Even if it is only little steps…each week I make one. I have too many dust bunnies and a huge mess in the studio and have fallen in the pit. Trusting that my knee time today will pull me back out.
You are so blessed to have that wee child come and delight over all your sweet things. And all those cozy hugs too. OH!…I think I just heard her say that red and green lights are so last Christmas. 🙂
      Wishing you JOY!

  50. Sandi says

    Hi Diane,
I love your blue and yellow table setting. I especially like your grandmother’s silverware; it’s beautiful! What a treasure to have. Thank you for sharing and coming to tea. Happy Spring!

  55. wow! yellow and blue are striking dance partners, aren’t they …

  56. Kathy says

Yellow is definitely the sign of spring with all the daffodils and now the forsythia. Love the combination of yellow and blue – so vibrant! Beautiful tablescape! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
    Kathy

    • Diane says

Oh my….you have daffodils AND forsythia?! It’snowed here again. It didn’t accumulate, thank goodness. 🙂
Thanks for you sweet remarks Kathy!! Hope your weekend is extraordinary!

  57. I have yellow tulips in my kitchen this week, yellow being the brightest and happiest colour for me. Outdoors a blue and yellow colour scheme is a favourite at any time of year! Your photos are so cheerful and lovely! Just what we need at this time.

    • Diane says

Yellow tulips! I swoon! Oh I too love yellow and blue in the garden. Pure loveliness.
Thank you for stopping by and leaving your sweet words! 🙂

  58. Patti says

What a sweet setting! How clever to use the eggs in the arrangement, they work beautifully!
The little hens on nests are just gorgeous.
    Hugs,
    Patti

    • Diane says

Oh Patti, you have such lovely taste, your words are a real encouragement. 🙂 Thank you!!

  59. I **LOVE** daffodils too. They look so pretty on your blue table. The little cobalt hens-on-nest are really cute. I collect those too. I did a post about them a couple of years ago. There is a lot of great information online that might help you to identify the maker and if the pieces really do go together.

  61. It looks very pretty. I have bunches of daffodils in a white pitcher on my black soapstone table and they are so cheery. They smell pretty too.

Don’t the daffodils smell lovely? They really are a wonderful fragrance.
Thanks for your taking the time to stop by….hope your week is Extraordinary!

  62. What a beautiful tablescape – isn’t it neat how one piece can inspire a whole table setting? I love the crocus pot – and the addition of the eggs is inspired. What a lovely table. (I was born and raised in Michigan, by the way.)

Thanks so much for joining in this week!

  69. Such pretty colours and what’s not to like about daffodils lol.

  70. Those colors are just perfect for Spring, Diane. And the cobalt blue glassware is beautiful. (I love those little chicken on a baskets… I have a white one that was my grandmother’s.) Such a pretty table! And that is my favorite stanza from the Song of Solomon… I always think of it when spring is near. Wishing you a happy day.

  76. I love the yellow and blue combo… very fresh and classic for spring! Thanks so much for sharing it at Project Inspire{d} this week!

    • Diane says

You are so kind to say that Shannon. Thank you!!!
Wishing you and yours a Joyous Easter!

  77. Yes yellow comes up as a spring color in my mind- Between daffodils and forsythia I think they are the first to bloom here. I like the linens they have a classic design and great color! I like the cobalt blue stemware and especially at that price! I re-use things around my home all the time- I usually feel more joy with what I’ve created for having done that.

  78. So, so pretty! Yellow is most definitely a sure sign of Spring, and you’ve presented it beautifully here with the blue and white it tow. I’ve been struggling with putting together a sunshiny yellow tablescape. Maybe because we’ve been dealing with so much ick here. Grey skies, overcast, lots of wind…we’re under a tornado watch as I type. THOSE are sure signs of Spring here in the Kansas City area!!! 🙂

I have some of those covered chicken dishes…although I think mine might be ducks. And mine are white ceramic. I think I like yours better. Trade? 😉

I don’t know that I have ever seen a crocus pot before. Maybe I have. My mind is going, going, almost gone these days. It’s pretty, though! Glad you found it! Shopping the house is such a neat deal. Not only do you find useful things you forgot you had, but you can knock off a bit of Spring cleaning as you go! What a deal!!!

Have a beautiful weekend! Thanks for sharing your glorious Spring table with us!

  79. Bev says

Love this color scheme…I used it myself not too long ago! Your centerpiece is wonderful and I like the way you used your hen and nest cobalt blue pieces.

  80. Jenna says

As much fun as it is to have something new, I get the most satisfaction out of creating something new from putting things together that I already have in a new way for a new look~ great advice and inspiration Diane! True creativity at it’s best!

  81. One of my all-time favourite colour combos is blue, white, and yellow. There is something so fresh about it.

    • Me, too, Barbara! Over time I have a tendency to get away from that combo, but when I return, it’s always like a wave of fresh air.
Have a happy and blessed day!
