I love this Thoreau quote on winter…

“One must maintain a little bit of summer,
even in the middle of winter.”

~Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau Winter Quote :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

This week…my bit of summer has been bluebirds…..perched high up on the tree in front of my window.

Those round feathery puffs of blue and orange are a true delight while the branches sway and the snow drives horizontal.

They are the true blue promise of spring.

It may be February, but I’m counting the days ’til spring.

You too?

Thank you for stopping by today.
I appreciate you and your sweet comments make my day.

Dreaming of spring & summer…

Diane

    I live in Pembroke Ontario Canada and wish we had bluebirds, they are one of the prettiest birds. But we do have Black capped chikadees and a black and grey nuthatch of some kind that I watch from my hottub. I am anxiously awaiting spring too….to hear the birds thru the open windows!!! I would love to see some pics of the bluebirds if you have any.

      Hi Germaine!

      Chickadees are my favorite!! I love their happy little song and they are so unafraid of humans. I noticed the other day when it was just around freezing….a real heat wave…that the birds were starting to sing. There is hope for spring! 🙂

      Here’s a post I shared last fall that has several bluebirds in the photo. I needed to have used a tripod for the photos…but it was too spontaneous. Here’s the link: https://anextraordinaryday.net/case-ruffled-feathers-bluebirds/

      Hope your week is extraordinary!

    To misquote Shakespeare:
    Springtime, Springtime, where for art Thou?

      Thoreau said it right! And, I like Gail’s Shakespearean quote. I live in Maryland and we have had an unusually cold winter here – first time in many, many years.

      Spring is on the way:D

        And just today I heard from someone who said they need the AC on already in the deep south. Shall we share this chill with her?

    • Diane says

      Haha!!! You said it!!!!

    Haha…I’m with Gail!! No bluebirds to speak of, subzero nights AGAIN and more white stuff in the forecast. But it’s only February and this IS typical for February (As is my whining LOL). 😀

      As I type this back to you we are having whiteout conditions. I feel sorry for the school bus drivers who are picking up little kids right now. Yes…I know you are right. In fact I know we’ll have some more storms in March. But, I am sooooo ready for spring. Somehow this seems like the longest winter eeevvveeerrr.

    Diane,
    I live in Michigan, and honest to goodness, I saw the first robin last week! Very unusual. I think all of nature is confused!

      Ann…when we lived in the Buffalo area we always saw Robins arrive in February…with plenty of winter through March. You might not know this, but not all Robins go south either. We hiked a very large park there and all winter long there was a section of the woods we went through that had Robins in the trees all winter long.

  5. Gwen says

    I do like this quote and pinned it for Thoreau always hides a meaning in his simple words…literally, summer is nice to think upon in the bleak leafless landscape of a chilly winter gray day.
    And in the winter of life, aren’t memories of summer…that time when our children were still at home and noise and laughter filled our days…keep that in your heart to warm the quiet, still, white-haired and hard to see days of the winter of our life. It warms our day to reminisce about an event and burst into laughter about that day. This is summer in the life time of winter. A small child standing close to help blow out the candles to represent your winter days brings summer to that otherwise cold day. The days of summer warm the heart when the stark reality is silence, darkness, chilliness all around, bones that never warm, and blinded vision brought on by the stark white reality of this is the winter of my life.

    • Diane says

      So well said, Gwen. Truly. The quote was fitting for our long and seemingly endless winter here in the Great Lakes, but you are are so right about the other ‘winters’ of our lives. I think it also speaks to the glass half full, the sunny side of life, and more. We have choices everyday to think positively or negatively…you my friend seem to continually choose well…in spite of your challenges. Praying that today is a sunny and warm day in your body and spirit. {hugs}
