Let me tell you about the day I settled for second best…

It wasn’t pretty.

Let me tell you about that day when I chose second best - AnExtraordinaryDay.net

It was one of those days.

You know… the kind where you take one cookie… and before you know it… you’ve had six.

I’ve never thought of myself as an emotional eater.

But SIX cookies?!!

Cookies don’t make me feel better… in fact… they give me a pain in my stomach.  My stomach was NOT designed for SIX cookies. (Six peanut M&M’s, maybe.)

So why did I eat them?

Because at the moment… their sweet and chocolaty goodness gave me a brief pleasure.

Followed by stomach discomfort.

One cookie was fine… but I had a choice in each of the goings back for more.

And each time… I chose… one more cookie.

This isn’t a regular thing for me.

That day I settled for second best... AnExtraordinaryDay.net

The reality is… I needed something.

Something good.

The thing is… the goodness I longed for was not made of flour and sugar and chocolate chips.

The goodness I longed for is far more sustaining.

But, I chose a cheap substitute.

I don't know about you... but I'm tired of second best. AnExtraordinaryDay.net

We all do that from time to time.

We eat or drink something to feel better.

We go shopping, out to dinner, to a concert, to the salon, etc.

None are bad activities…

They’re just second best.

Most of us are pretty good at choosing… second best.

Some days we settle for second best when God has something much better for us. AnExtraordinaryDay.net

I don’t know about you… but I’m tired of second best.

I want THE best!

That’s what God wants for us too.

He wants us to choose HIS best.

Cookies don’t nurture my spirit.

God does!

Instead of reaching for that second, third, and sixth cookie… reach out to God…

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Psalm 34:8

And enjoy the sweetness of His everlasting love for you.

“I love you with an everlasting love.
So I will continue to show you my kindness.”
Jeremiah 31:3

Anything else is a cheap substitute.

God’s best is always waiting for us and His amazing love never runs out.

If you’re wondering about God’s love for you today…

take a few minutes to listen to this song that makes my heart soar.  I hope it does the same for you, too.

  1. God is the BEST thing!
    Joy Day, here it is:
    1. When He speaks personally to me through a Scripture I’ve heard a hundred times and it’s as if it’s a brand new revelation.
    2. A new book I opened up to read today that is already blowing my socks off. How will I ever put it down?
    3. The sound of cicadas singing round me as I sit on the screened porch writing my thanks.
    4. The cooling off that comes at the end of Summer and fresh breezes blowing round me.
    5. Hearing great news for a good friend and rejoicing with her in God’s blessing.
    6. The beginning of my 40-Day Retreat With Jesus today 🙂
    7. The work God is doing in the lives of family members to bring them back to Him, even when I can’t see what’s happening.
Thank you Diane. Every time I think of you I pray God’s blessings for you and your family.
    Love & hugs,
    Patti

  3. Kim says

Diane, this is so true! I have allowed too many pounds to creep up by choosing 2nd best. Ugh! I needed this post, so thank you for speaking Truth, my friend! I’m thankful for…
    – God’s work behind the scenes,
    – His new direction in ministry,
    – God’s provision,
    – God’s healing of a dear friend’s son,
    – the Love of Jesus as explained to me anew through His word this morning,
    – good health in spite of insufficient care of self,
    – answered prayers in such huge ways that astound me every day!

    • Kim, I should know this… but it’s like my eyes are being opened to the realization that if we fill ourselves up with God and His goodness… our “desires” seem to go away (or at least don’t rear their ugly heads quite the same). He completes us and fills all our hungry “holes.” So why is this so hard for us to “get”?
Thanks for sharing your ‘seven.” My heart rejoices with yours at all God’s goodness expressed in your life. Have a blessed week my friend!
