The EASY way to make an ice skating centerpiece for your impromptu winter party.     Growing up in Michigan, I started ice skating when I was a little girl.  There wasn't anything better than the freedom of skating as fast as I could at our local ice arena.  And then my dad signed me up for figure skating lessons.  JOY!  That meant that I could be on the ice nearly every single day!     As a mitten state girl, I enjoy winter sports, but between the weather and my schedule and life, I'm not doing them so much anymore. I still LOVE figure … [Read more...]

Today I want to show you a fun and Inexpensive Winter Vignette that evokes a soft and cozy feeling and can be put together for just pennies.     Once we had our little Valentine's Day celebration with our neighbor kids, I was so ready to switch up the wall and side table in my living room. When I first put it together I absolutely loved it and it made me smile every time I walked in the door. But, once Valentine's Day was over... I was ready to get my creativity on and have fun making over that spot.     One of my favorite color combinations is really not … [Read more...]

I can hardly believe it! It's late December and there isn't a flake on the ground here in Michigan. After last year's deep freeze and over abundance of snow... I'm loving it! Have you given much thought to outdoor decorating for Christmas? I'm sure you've seen the homes with all the colorful light displays and entryways beautifully festooned with greens and lights.     Today I'm sharing an idea for decorating those areas that are more personal.  The ones not seen from the street... such as the back porch.  The places where you'll enjoy your favorite things with a holiday or wintry flair.     As I was going through some old photos, I discovered I took several pictures of an outdoor wintry garden vignette on my back porch.  This was … [Read more...]

I've been hearing this question a lot lately, "Is there enough snow for you?" Having lived in West Michigan and in the Buffalo area, I am familiar with snow.  Lots of it.  Record snowfalls.  This year, it snows or seems to snow every day.  Regardless of the amount, it's enough!   Prior to this year's white avalanche, I shared my winter mantel and asked if anyone wanted me to create a tutorial for making pretty snowflakes.  It seems that I am not the only one who did not know that there was a paper-folding technique that would make all the difference in the world.  So, today, just in case … [Read more...]

Today was a snow day for many people in our area. With strong winds and temperatures dipping from the single digits to below zero, we have two choices....embrace winter or hop a plane to the tropics. Since hopping on a plane really isn't a possibility for most of us....take a peek of my new Winter Mantel, or how about we open the archives and see how I embraced the snowflakes and icicles, last year, by decorating the table for winter with red and white, here: Winter Table     And now on to our Extraordinary Link Party....   Mary Beth from Cupcakes and Crinoline    ~   Malia … [Read more...]

It's cold here in the Great Lakes. I woke up to a fresh blanket of sparkly snow and a big fat zero on the thermometer this morning.     It was a gloriously beautiful morning with deep blue skies and sunshine casting dark purple shadows between the rows of trees.     As I ate my blueberry banana pancakes this morning, I noticed  a large flock of birds flying around the backyard.  When I got up and went to the slider, I looked up to see a host of Cedar Wax Wings* flitting around in the tops of the maple tree, their breasts a gorgeous gold, illuminated by the rising … [Read more...]

I finally settled on my word for the year...      Joy.   If you read my previous Joy Day! post you already know that. And so I thought it would be fun to show you how I put together this little Wintry Wall Vignette over my sideboard and share a little more of the behind the scenes meaning.  Plus, a brief tutorial! Ready?!     The JOY Basket. Last year during the Christmas season I created this basket of joy.  This year I didn't have a place for it.   After all the gold and glitz of Christmas got put away, I came across the joy basket again and propped it up on … [Read more...]

Winter came roaring back this week.  Cold temps.  High winds.  And plenty of those frozen crystals that fall from the sky. Though we would like to be seeing daffodils and's still a bit early. With that in mind, I spent this week embracing winter.  Inside.     This post contains affiliate links.
