Daffodils Centerpiece :: Yellow Table Setting for Two :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

I did it again! Seriously I am having too much fun playing in my sun room.   Since we painted the trim white, I have so enjoyed dressing the sun room for the seasons!  And now that it’s warming up I’ll enjoy spending lots of time out there too.

Here’s my latest iteration…

A Sunny Yellow Table Setting for Two

Vintage crocus pot filled with daffodils & grape hyacinth :: Yellow Table Setting :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Do you recognize the cheerful vintage yellow crocus pot?

It’s a 1940’s piece of pottery that looks amazingly contemporary.  Gotta love that!  For Easter I had blue and white eggs in each of the surrounding planting holes with the same daffodils in the middle.  This time I placed faux grape hyacinths in the planting holes and then filled around all the flowers with some moss, all from my stash.     Don’t you think they’re perfect for this simple and cheerful centerpiece.

The sun was coming in the other afternoon and I decided that I wanted to change things up just a bit, so I dropped the leaves on the table and set up a sunny dining spot for two. The table was draped with an old, frayed-hem tablecloth I made some time ago of osnaburg fabric.  To create a little sunshine I added the buttery plaid place mats from my stash on which I placed my Longaberger Classic Blue Dinnerware.  This now retired dinnerware pattern has been in constant use since I purchased it in the mid 90’s and look at how it still shines so beautifully.

Yellow & White Table Setting ::  AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Homemade soup is constant in our home and so I added a Longaberger Woven Reflections Bowl in butternut yellow to the dinner and bread plates.  You might remember when I first brought out these lovely vintage goblets in a sunny shade of gold.  I also used them here and here.

Yellow Tablescaping Collage :: AnExtraordinaryDay

The silverplate has a great story.

My husband went to Russia to lead a youth camp in the mid 90’s.  He always took thoughtful gifts for his hosts and translators.  One year I sent him with a Longaberger Berry Basket filled with inexpensive seed packets.  Oh my goodness.  Who knew that those seed packets were like gold.  After receiving the gift, his translator’s wife went running down her street showing the neighbors all her seed packets.

The following year, Tim did not see the translator at camp.  However the couple made a special trip to see him after camp and excitedly talked about their “Tim Garden.”  As a special appreciation they gave him a box of silver plated table service for six that was made in their small town.  It’s a continental table service.  See how large the soup spoon is?  Demitasse spoons also came with the set.

Isn’t this a great story?  I’m amazed at how very significant those packets of seeds were to that family.

Blue Accents with Sunny Yellow Table Setting :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Each place setting has a whimsical garden bird just for fun.  My dear friend gave me these years ago and I thought they were just the whimsy needed.  Don’t you love the blue bird’s polka dots and fun yellow boots?   The yellow bird actually had sunshine in her eyes the other day.  The hat sure came in handy.  {wink. wink.} Each place is graced with Longaberger napkins in the Four Petal design of white on ivory.  The pewter napkin rings are sweet little baskets from the Longaberger shop in Dresden.

Yellow Accented Sun Room :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Here’s a glimpse of my sunny sun room.

You might remember seeing the forsythia wreath or branches or spring tulip wreath.  And if you look closely you’ll see the book page flowering branches hanging over the table.

I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun tweaking one area in my house before.

Not a dime has been spent in creating this cheerful corner. Let me encourage you to look at what you have in a new and fresh way. You might layer your table linens like I did.  None of the yellows or ivories perfectly match, but it all comes together because there is a unified theme.  At one time I would not have put together a table setting like this because the colors don’t match perfectly.  And I wouldn’t have used the goblets or the table service because I would have felt the need to have a more contemporary style with the dinnerware.   Um. Yeah.  I think maybe I had a problem. Now I know that “It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.”   (Thanks Nester!)  That statement has been freeing for me.   Maybe even life-changing.  Creativity can get stifled when we think that everything needs to match.

Do you have a spot in your home that you enjoy decorating for the seasons? Do you ever struggle with perfection or need to be “matchy”? What helps you be more creative?

I wish you all could come for lunch.  Or as Hyacinth Bucket on the old PBS series, “Keeping Up Appearances” would say, “Tea and light refreshments.” Until my next creative inspiration, we will certainly be enjoying our sunny yellow table setting for two.

Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  1. I love your sunny room and tablescape for two! The seed story is so heartwarming. Thank you for the enjoyable, warm post. 🙂

    • Diane says

Thank you, Kim, for taking the time to read the post. 😉 Do you ever notice that people comment and you realize they never actually read what you wrote? I appreciate your sweet comments.
      Wishing you a beautiful day!!

    • Pam says

I just love your sun room. So relaxing.

      • Diane says

That is the nicest thing to say, Pam….Thank you!!!!
        Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  2. I love your cheerful sun room. Love your tablescape. And you are so right! Beautiful does not mean perfect. And I get a kick out of bloggers, really, how they just miss the point of a post, think it is you in a photo when you state it is someone else, use a quote and give credit, but they think you wrote it. State something is completely diet, they will comment it is too fattening for them, etc. etc. lol xo

    • Diane says

Oh Barbara you put the biggest smile on my face. One for the nice things you have said….thank you. 😉 And two because you are so right. Recently someone commented on something and had only looked at the photos and thus the comment made no sense. It was sadly funny. Maybe we try to hard and end up running on fumes. Yes? Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  3. Sue says

I love your cute sunny sun room….loved the story of the seeds and the “quote” from The Nester, one of my favorites and of course “Keeping Up Appearances” loved that show.

    • Diane says

Awww thanks Sue!! It’s funny “Keeping Up Appearances” is so old and yet, if I ever have a chance to see one of those old episodes I just can miss it….always good for a good laugh. Hope your day is Extraordinary!

  4. Diane, I love you sun room and your creativity. Spending time there with you this spring inspired me a bit.
We took down our old, no longer productive grapevines and as we were loading the sad remains into the truck for recycling, in my mind’s eye I saw your wreaths!
I gathered some of the vines and now have a wreath to remind me of their years of productivity, the hum of bees and the intoxicating fragrance of grapes in September and the yummiest jelly. Thank you!

    • Diane says

Awww thanks Elaine! I am overjoyed that my little corner of the world inspired you. How special that you now have a wreath from your old vines to help your treasure the memories. 😉 Maybe you will replant?
Also…Wondering if you came up with a solution for your blog?
      May your day be Extraordinary!

      • Thanks for asking and for your advice; I appreciate your input, Diane.
I’m moving along with the blog conversion and although I did hit a little snag today; I’m sure it will work out one way or another.

        • Diane says

I’ll look forward with you to a wonderful second beginning!!
May your week overflow with JOY!

  5. Such a bright lovely spot. I love your table and how you have dressed it. The yellow is such a splash of happy color.

  6. Diane, I just love your spot! It’s always so cheerful and welcome. Lucky gal!! Loving the blue and white dishes. The tablecloth is so perfect!!! The flowers in the center.. just love them. Really a spot I’d love to come hang out! xo marlis

  7. I really adore your tablesetting and what a wonderful sun porch!!! So glad you linked to Open House!

  8. So fresh and pretty – perfect for springtime!

    • Diane says

      Thank you Mary Lise!! 😉
Wishing you An Extraordinary SPRING Day!

  9. Donna says

    Hi Diane,

Isn’t it funny how the littlest things…..some packets of seeds….make the biggest impact in someone else’s life! My husband has the sweetest, elderly aunt in PA who loves to read. Whenever I get books to her, you would think that I had just given gold! It truly is the simple things that we remember the most!

Love your table setting with all the Longaberger!

    • Diane says

Oh Donna, that is so true. Sometimes we overlook those simple things when they might be the biggest blessing. In this case…I think that seeds were costly and hard to come by. In the mid 90’s we would see people parked along the highway there selling goods they made in their factory…pans…crystal, etc. Their company could not afford to pay them, so they gave them goods to sell instead. Much progress has been made in that regard.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your sweet words Donna!
      Wishing you an Extraordinary weekend!

  10. This is such a beautiful spring tablescape – you did a truly fabulous job!

    • Diane says

How nice of you to say that Michele! Thank you!! 🙂

  11. Sarah says

Blue and yellow always make me smile with happiness. Your sunny spot is wonderful. Love the way you used the hyacinths with the daffodils. ~ Sarah

    • Diane says

What is there about blue and yellow? That combo is just hands down happy!!! Thanks for stopping by and leaving such sweet encouraging words, Sarah! Blessings! P.S. I guess you just might like those grape hyacinths…yes? [wink wink]

  12. Glenda Kremer says

beautiful as always—you really do need to have a business!
    hugs!
    Glenda

    • Diane says

Awww….Glenda…you are so sweet! 😉 Thank you! [hugs]

  13. LUCY says

    Everything looks great Diane…xo

    • Diane says

Thanks! I’d love to see what you would do with these same things (give or take), Lucy. You have such amazing creativity.
      Blessings!

  14. Well this tablescape just makes you smile because it just feels so Spring and sunshiny! thank you for sharing at TTF!

    • Diane says

  15. Your sunroom is adorable…lovely tablescape.

    • Diane says

      Marigene…you have just blessed me!
      Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!!

  16. Mel says

    Just cheery and so beautiful

  17. Wow….you just NEVER know what will get people excited!!! I’ll bet those seed packets provided year after year after year of a harvest they may never have otherwise seen. I guess when it comes to gift-giving it really IS best to think outside the box…or at least think like the recipient! And what a lovely gift you were given in return!!!!!

I’m so glad you are enjoying full use of your sun room! My Mom enjoys hers so much, and I sure wish I had one. Sitting out on the deck just isn’t the same…too many uninvited guests (bees, wasps, bird poop!).

Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for sharing that great story! (Visiting from Susan’s TT)

    • Diane says

Ahhh….bird poop…that’s the worst! Haha!! Alycia…you just cracked me up!!
You are right…you never know what will make a difference. I do know that it was a necessity there for families to grow their own food. But, we didn’t know it when we put together that little gift.
Thanks for your kind words. You are always such a wonderful encouragement.
      Blessings!

  18. So cheery and beautiful – I would love to come for tea or lunch!

    • Diane says

And wouldn’t we have so much fun?!!
Thanks Melanie! Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!

    • Diane says

      Thank you Cheryl!
      Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!

  20. Abby says

I don’t have a spot that I like to decorate particularly for seasons, but I’d love to start doing that as our budget allows. My mom always did when I was growing up and I loved it. I love your yellow; it’s so cheerful!

    • Diane says

This room is a bit over the top with the wreaths and such Abby. I bet you can do small things with what you have using color, free printables, and such to create a seasonal theme. And though I don’t have a spot in my budget for fresh right now, flowers can be just the big of season zing and really can cost very little.
Thanks for taking time to stop by and share! Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  21. So pretty!

  22. Jenna says

I love your busy little birds! Your table is beautiful and the seed story is so touching, but those little birds cracked me up! So cute!

    • Diane says

Awww…thanks Jenna! They were the best gift. Just a glance at them puts a smile on my face. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your sweet words!
      Have An Extraordinary Day!

  23. Diane says

    • Diane says

It was a heartfelt blessing, Diane! Thank you for your kind words! Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!

  30. Marvelous post!!! I SO ENJOYED that story!!! What a great idea you had….and what a lovely spot those flowers must have made!! I can just see that lady running around her street showing off those seed packets, and then lovingly and carefully planting the seeds…watching closely day after day and probably spending so much time enjoying the flowers. It is precious. I must remember that something so ordinary to myself is life-changing to others in this world. Things of beauty are not the norm for many. Thank you so much for sharing such a lovely story. And for sharing your beautiful table scape! Love those bowls…that color yellow is gorgeous!
    Blessings,
    Doni

    • Diane says

Doni, you just put the biggest smile on my face!! [hugs] Isn’t it just like God to impress on us to do such small things that become big things. I thought the basket was the wonderful gift…hand made in America, etc. But, seed packets? God knew!
      Thanks for being Extraordinary today!

Thank you Claudia! This year is the first I’ve used the crocus pot since I brought it home from my parents’ home several years ago. I can’t believe how much fun I’ve had with it. Maybe next year I’ll actually plant crocus in it! 😀

Yes, you would have so much fun with that room. I’m totally loving ‘playing’ in it! 😉
      Have a blessed Sunday!

  42. I love seeing what can be done with what you find around the house. I’m not “visionary” in what can be done, but I’m willing to try things and keep working on them until they come around. I have a shelf in the kitchen that I change almost every week to focus on the season or what’s happening in our family (birthday, where in the world my husband has traveled to, etc). I love seeing it come together, especially when it’s an unexpected assortment that works!

I’m visiting through Inspire Me Monday.

    • Diane says

Your shelf sounds fabulous! How fun to have a spot to “play” with and create sweet moments. 🙂
Wishing you an Extraordinary week, Sharon!

Thank you for your kind words today, Cristina!
      Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  46. Love the way that you have it set up. I just told my hubby yesterday that I have to get some flowers for the table. And those are cute even if I just cut them. They are every where at this time of the year.

    • Diane says

If I could have fresh flowers on the table…that would be my number one choice. We didn’t manage to get daffies in the ground last fall. So many fall things to do in a ‘new-to-me’ house. Thank you for your kind words, Margaret! Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

How did you develop such a relationship with Longaberger? I need to check it out! Oh and the centerpiece is fab too!

    Lovely post.

  57. Carol says

What a lovely tablescape. I am absolutely in love with those white with blue dishes. I had no idea that Longaberger made dishes. I will have to go to their website.

Your story of the “Tim” garden is so sweet. Thanks for sharing such an uplifting story.

    • Diane says

You put a big smile on my face Carol! Thanks for our kind words!
      Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  58. Carol says

    Thank you!

I just went to the Longaberger site and found some sweet little woven luncheon plates in my favorite primary color palette. They aren’t cheap, but I have been looking so long for dishes I love and these might just be it.

Carol, I know they aren’t cheap. They are really high quality….chip, craze, and crack resistant. They are actually vitrified pottery which are baked at a super high temp. Thus they are not porous and totally health/safe even if they were to get chipped. Plus you can bake, freeze, microwave, and they clean up like a breeze. We have lots of the pottery and even use it for picnics. Crazy…but fun. And totally love it. If you should decide to order, please make sure that my name is in the upper corner of the website…that way I will get credit and will be blessed with your purchase. Please if you have any questions, email me at basketladydi at aol dot com. Thanks for checking Longaberger out.

  61. Just getting around to a little more blog hopping from Let’s Dish and clicked here. I am so glad I did. Not only do I love your table (and the setting!) I love the story about the flatware and just in general your blog voice.

I Do have several places in my house that I like to play with. For years, it was hard because my house wasn’t as neutral as it needed to be. Now that I have created more neutral spaces, I love to play even more.

And I am a perfectionist and love a table set with the actual set of china, but in dish playing I would rather mix up a set if I can.

Loved the table and post and am going to follow along.
