It’s the day after Christmas.

After Christmas Snow blanketing Adirondack Chairs

Our friends in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand celebrate Boxing Day today.    If you make your home in one of those beautiful places….Happy Boxing Day!

I decided to look up Boxing Day to see what it was all about.  It isn’t about the sport of boxing, nor is it about boxing up items.  Instead, this holiday goes back many years when the service of employees would be required on Christmas Day.  The employer would in turn give their employee the day after Christmas off to spend with family and boxes of food and other gifts to take with them.  Today, it’s a day when Christmas gifts are returned and stores have deep discounts enticing shoppers to spend their Christmas money.

Things have certainly changed.

What do you do the day after Christmas?

  • Go shopping for the great sales?
  • Snuggle in and enjoy an extended holiday?
  • Go back to work…business as usual?
  • Travel home?
  • Attend yet one more party or gathering?

Today was business as usual for me.

And then it started snowing.  And blowing.  And snowing some more.

Snowfall in the garden

I love being inside when it’s snowy and blustery outside.  Do you?

At some point though, I absolutely must get out there and breathe it all in.   And so I did.

Stone Bunny buried in a wreath covered with snow

It was a bit too slippery to go for my “daily constitutional,” a reference Charles Dickens made of his daily 10 mile walk.    And since there isn’t a flat spot around here…I decided to have a little fun tromping in the snow and taking pictures around my house and yard.  Of course, that’s no surprise to anyone!

Winter photos. Close-up of snow on Bittersweet

My favorite photo is this close up of Bittersweet berries which I gathered in the fall.  I didn’t think they looked particularly Christmasy or wintry, but since they stilled looked nice, I decided to keep them in my antique jug on the back porch.

The photo of the birdhouses and galvanized floral pail filled with Bittersweet was something that was quickly thrown together when I was trying to figure out what to do with some Bittersweet left over from a wreath I made in November.   The only tweaking it received for Christmas was a bough or two of Frasier Fir.   Maybe I’ll come out here and play some more with this vignette, or not.   What do you think?

Do you have any after Christmas traditions?
I’d love to hear what you do…or did!!

Wintry wishes blowing your way…

Diane

Ahhhhhhh……..what a bit of white does to a waning colour world. It makes it all POP.
Gorgeous photos–well worth the slip-sliding about to capture the snippets of beauty.

Boxing day was a quiet day–mostly cuz of one sick person and one lame person. *laughing* All in the life of Mel! We get a bit of everything to stretch us and help us keep moving, eh?
It’s all good. Quiet is a welcome thing for a woman who tends to go ‘warp speed with her hair on fire’. Gotta love the Big Guy for making arrangements. 😉

    • Diane says

You just put a smile on my face, Mel! 😀 Forced quiet….it’s a good thing that we wish didn’t happen the way it does. Oh well…. Love your attitude.
      Enjoy your moments of peace.

  2. Patti says

  8. Great snowy photos! We got a lot of snow the night of Christmas, so the day after I was snowed in! Supposed to go back to work but couldn’t make it. I love to just stay inside by the fire, drinking something warm when it’s cold and snowy outside. That is, after I take care of all my animals outside first thing in the morning!

Visiting from Weekly Top Shot. Happy new year!

    • Diane says

Being snowed in is one of the best things. 😀 It’s like slowing the world down. Now, only if I had a fireplace!!!
Thanks for stopping by Tammy and leaving your sweet comment. 😀

  9. Lovely snowy scenes… are those rosehips? Don’t they add such wintry color? Thank you for sharing on Weekly Top Shot #63!

    • Diane says

      Hi Madge!
The second photo does have a few rosehips peeking through below the red Christmas ball. But, the other photos actually are of bittersweet that I had gathered in November for Thanksgiving. I love the color in the winter and I think they help attract the birds too.

  10. Meg says

Talk about a lot of snow! Great captures – I absolutely love your pine cone shot.

    • Diane says

Oh Meg, thank you so much!! I think more snow is coming over night!! Yay! More pictures!! 😀
Thanks for coming by and leaving your sweet remark! 😀
