Are you a sky watcher?

AnExtraordinaryDay | Joy Day! | Sky Watcher | Clouds at Sunset

When I lived in Michigan, Autumn always brought what we termed “El Greco clouds.”   One September I spent the month touring the beautiful country of Spain.  While there I visited Toledo where I discovered works by the painter from Crete, El Greco.  I was fascinated with the cloud formations and unique lighting in his paintings.  As we would look westward, in Spain or Michigan, at twilight I would notice that same etherial lighting and magical cloud formations, just as El Greco painted them in the late 1500’s and early 1600’s.  The beauty would make my heart would skip.

After our move from Michigan, each fall we would look, hoping to see “El Greco Clouds” in the skies over Western New York.  It only happened once or twice in our eleven years there.

Cloud formations are very different from Michigan to New York to Pennsylvania. Maybe because we are higher in elevation here in Pennsylvania, or maybe because we look up more due to the mountains, but I have enjoyed noticing all the beautiful cloud configurations.  Though not “El Greco Clouds,” I’m attempting to photograph them.  Something I’ve never done before.

I’m amazed at the joy I derive from the evening lighting and the unique cloud formations.  Here is one I shot from a recent walk.  The scripture verse seemed appropriate.

Have you ever been like Charlie Brown and the gang….lying on the grass….face to the sky…seeing all kinds of creatures in the clouds?

Do you watch the sky for weather?

Do you go to the lake shore or somewhere with a view anticipating a beautiful sunset?

Not living near one of the Great Lakes any more, or even the flat cornfields of Indiana, I miss seeing the sun setting on the horizon.  But, if I go for a walk up, up, up, to a higher elevation, I am blessed to see some lovely vistas and might even be able to capture a “new for me” version of the sun setting.

Joy!

It comes in the little things.

Like twilight and clouds and sunsets.

Things that are free.  Things that are priceless.  Things that are fleeting.  Things that make the heart skip.  Things that cause me to praise God.  Things that make my heart glad and fill me with joy.

What little things do that for you?

Joy Day!

A day we give thanks for the little things God blesses us with, every day.

Will you join me in this giving thanks?

I’ll start….here are just seven from my week:
