There isn’t anything prettier than streets lined with Bradford Pear Trees in early spring.

One of my good friends in Western New York lived on one of those streets. I would drive out of my way just to see the glory of all those flowering pear branches sporting their stunning white blossoms. Ahhhh….the beauty. My small town is not lined with them, but the few along the tree line bring brilliance to Main Street.

Flowering Pear Branches :: Quaint Town :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

We haven’t lived in our current house very long. Last year was our first spring here and we were more about trimming the jungle in our yard than in reveling in the beauty. This year when I looked out my window, I realized that just outside my fence line, in the right-of-way, there are two trees very close together. A Bradford Pear tree and a crab apple of some sort.

Spring Flowering Pear Branches Make Lovely Piano Top Decor :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Have you seen the sticks with roots that hope to become trees that you can purchase at the garden centers? I’m pretty certain that was the beginning of those trees. Planting them six feet apart might have seemed like a great distance 25 years ago. Today…they grow into each other with the crab apple shrouding the pear’s lower limbs.

It hit me. Wow! For the first time ever, I can cut flowering pear branches to enjoy in the house. I had to reach up high, but I managed to cut a handful from the back of the tree and brought them in to grace my piano.

They were so easy to arrange. Actually the easiest fresh arrangement I ever made. All I did was fill my retired Longaberger Etched Hurricane with water and slip the branches in for a long drink.

My mantel (um…piano) display is super simple. When you have something as stunning as flowering pear branches you really don’t need much to bring it all together. This was a fresh change from the spring look of my earthy Easter decor here.

Quick and Simple way to bring the outdoors inside and give a mantle or room a new freshness for the season. Flowering pear branches last and make a dramatic home decor statement. :: Pretty branches frame Botanical Art Print :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

A few months ago, my husband received some lovely botanical cards in the mail from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Since it is one of our favorite places to visit, I wish we were in a position to gift them, but in the meantime we have been blessed with these lovely cards. I selected one, trimmed the botanical front from the card and then added a piece of green colored cardstock I had on hand to the back, which I had cut to create a little frame around the art. Now that the card had been cut it’s now an art print. And a lovely free one too!

Longaberger Bread Basket & Flowering Pear Branches :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

A small plate stand from my stash was put into service and voila! a piece of spring art to compliment the Longaberger Bread Basket covering the unbecoming thermostat on the wall, and the greens and browns in the leaves and stems of the flowering pear branches in the hurricane turned vase. Completing the piano top is a simple vintage Revere bowl. I love that classic shape.

This spring display is a breath of fresh air in my home! Isn’t it interesting how something so simple can bring such joy and cheer to a space?

Do you have access to any flowering pear branches which you can cut to grace your home for spring?

If not, do you add fresh flowers to your home decor?

What’s your favorite way to use flowers in the house?

If I could, I’d have fresh flowers all the time!

Wishing YOU An Extraordinary Day!

Diane

P.S. For those of you who want to know more about the art print on the wall. I have a DIY tutorial here.

Note: After creating this vignette and publishing the post I’ve come to realize that there is a certain aroma about the Bradford Pear Branches. My husband hardly noticed it, but I’m generally sensitive to smells and so I moved them to the sunroom where I can close the door and still enjoy them through the glass. It also gave me another excuse to create a new vignette which I photographed and will post about soon. The aroma dissipated in a few days while the blossoms still look great. I think the solution might be to cut the branches and place them in a container of water outside for a few days to allow the unpleasant fragrance to go away. Or…skip the pear branches and pick cherry or apple or something else as handsome.

  1. Love using flowering tree branches inside. So pretty!!
    Mary Alice

  2. The Bradford pear trees in our town have a horrible stench to them. I am glad you found a type that you can bring in and enjoy. They look great on your piano vignette. Love that botanical print.

    • Diane says

It’s funny you would say that Donna. After I had them for a while I decided that they were a little aromatic, too. My husband didn’t notice, but I moved them to the sun room where I can close the door and still enjoy them. Though they no longer seem to have an aroma. The upside…a new setting and a new post coming up. 😉 Thanks for popping by!

      • I think some people are more sensitive to the aroma than others.

        • Diane says

Oh you may be right, Donna! Hmmm…I’d prefer not to be so sensitive to that one! haha!!

  3. Glenda Kremer says

Beautiful again! always so amazed at the great things you come up with! I have dried roses all over my house! I esp. loved when Kroger had 1 dozen roses for $2.99 then up to $4.99 still a bargain and of course they never go to waste! several bouquets top an antique clock. some hang on walls, others are still in vases. then I saw and orchid and decided I would give up on roses while it blooms! really hard to pass up $4.99 dozens tho!
    hugs!!
    Glenda Kremer

    • Diane says

Awwww…thanks Glenda! I think you are so wise to take advantage of roses at those terrific prices!! My friend picks up flowers at her Aldi all the time and they last too. How fun that you dry them. What a great way to keep the enjoyment going on and on!
Wishing you An Extraordinary Day, my friend!

  4. It looks refreshing and beautiful. I also love to decorate with flowers and branches from outside. Right now I have branches of flowers from a tree in our yard on my kitchen table. 🙂

    • Diane says

Ooooo….I bet your table is gorgeous!!
Thanks for stopping by Chrissy and leaving your thought remarks!
      Blessings!

  5. Botanic Bleu says

The Bradford pear branches are beautiful, but the basket covering the thermostat is brilliant!

    Judith

    • Diane says

I’m so glad you like it!! 😉 Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference, Judith!
      Hope your day is Extraordinary!

  6. Nici says

This is beautiful and simple! I love that!
    Blessings,
    Nici

    • Diane says

That’s me! Simple! Or at least that what I like to create.
Thanks Nici!!! Hope your day has been Extraordinary!

  7. Pam G says

I have a vitex tree that has long purple flowers that resemble lavender. When I trim back the tree I usually put the branches with flowers in vases, I hate to throw them away. They always look so beautiful.

    I lover the pear branches!

    • Diane says

Oh Pam, I do not know about Vitex trees. 😉 I’m going to have to Google them. They sound truly beautiful!
      Blessings!

  8. Lovely!

  9. Jean says

I love the spring display! I like the idea of decorating with tree branches although I’m afraid it would take a ladder to reach ours and I don’t think the soft maple branches are quite as pretty as your Bradford tree branches.

    • Diane says

I think the soft maple branches are beautiful. I was seriously thinking of snipping some. Go for it!!
And since I’ve done these I’ve noticed that the Nester had a post on branches of all kinds. Again…do it!! It will be stunning!
Good to have you stop by Jean! Blessings!

  10. Bonnie Jean Kirk says

I had the idea of using our bradford pear limbs–last year–as flowers inside AND like Donna said, someone sitting across from my desk, said, “What is that odor?” After checking, there was no mistake that the bad odor was the bradford pear blooms, which I quickly tossed outside.
Thanks for your amazing photography and sharing such uplifting challenges!
    Jean

    • Diane says

Haha! I mentioned to Donna earlier that after all was said and done I realized they had an aroma which my husband didn’t particularly notice. I moved them to the sun room where I can close the door and still enjoy them. A few days later there was no more scent. So….maybe the key is to pick them and put them in a water container outside and let the aroma dissipate.
Thanks for your kind words Bonnie Jean!
Hope your day has been Extraordinary!

  11. Elaine says

I have some pink rhododendron just opening and clipped some for the table. I love spring; there is always something fresh happening!

    • Diane says

How beautiful Elaine!! I have never clipped rhodies before…but later this spring I think I need to do that. They are one of my faves!
      Blessings!

  12. Beautiful vignette with beautiful blooms…Christine

    • Diane says

      Awww Christine…thank you soooo much!!
      Blessings!

  13. It’s beautiful, Diane! Thank you for sharing with us. I also enjoyed the lovely street view. Looks like you live in a very quaint town. Wish we had those beautiful branches near by. Soon we will have crape myrtles blooming, which are also lovely, but not the best for display in the home, unless of course you love having little flowers tracked everywhere! If I had unlimited funds, I would probably consider displaying fresh flowers at all times, but I will have to make do with enjoying the flower beds of others as my brown thumb doesn’t fare well with keeping plants alive in the Texas heat 🙂

    • Diane says

Thanks Jessica for your sweet comments!
I’m pretty good with outdoor gardening. But…in Texas with the heat….I don’t know I’d do so well either 😉
My friend picks up flowers at Aldi each week for something like $3. Do they have those stores in your area? Her flowers last a long time, too.
      Blessings!

      • Thanks for the tip on Aldi. I don’t think we have those locally, but I’ll have to check it out for flowers that inexpensive!

        • Diane says

My fingers are crossed! I hope you have one in your area. But, they might be a midwest/eastern states chain.

  14. Nayana says

Aahh…these looks so beautiful. I also clipped few branches today and did the arrangement. You hv a lovely blog…

    • Diane says

Ohhhh….I bet your arrangement is gorgeous!!
Thank you so much for stopping my Nayanna and leaving your sweet words. 😉

  15. Mel says

Well….how cool that they were there in the back yard the whole time! If you can’t go to visit, woohoo that they were there just for you!
    Right.
Lemme find my pruning shears, take a hike to our local garden…and borrow some branches!! LOL. I’m sure they won’t mind. I’ll even return ’em when I’m done with ’em! :-/
No, huh… Fine. I wouldn’t charge ’em for the pruning service even!!
Okay….fine. I’ll wait for the lilacs and prune the neighbors bush. He’s always appreciative of my help. LOL. He’s a good ol’ fella, that one. 🙂
Ohhh…but your branches with that cute little print….very nice.
LOL. And now ya know to cut early and leave them outside….which just gives you time to plan how to pretty up that special little dining place I say!

    • Diane says

You crack me up!! I can’t tell you all the ideas I have for getting more blooms. Our neighbor died and no one is at the house right now. I wonder if I can judiciously trim over there? Hmm…maybe not a good idea! 😉
Thanks for the love, Mel! Sending blessings your way!

  16. Cindy says

They are beautiful but they don’t smell good…at all! Lovely photos!!!
    Blessings,
    Cindy

    • Diane says

Haha! Mine really aren’t that bad.
      Thanks Cindy!!

  17. Mel says

Oh…and a side note. Thank you!
That’s for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society box…AND from me, in case you were wondering…Thank you thank you. THANK YOU.
And I think the boxes are tasteful and not the least bit overpowering.
Well done! (LOL. I knew you’d wanna know.) 😉

  18. Angela @hickorytrailblog.blogspot.com says

I love that you used your outdoors in your home. How beautiful. ~Angela 🙂

    • Diane says

      Thank you Angela!! 😀
It was so nice of you to stop by. Hope your week is Extraordinary!

  19. I don’t think the tree we have is Bradford, but it is a Pear. We lost its mate in Hurricane Sandy, just popped right out of the ground.
Your vignette is lovely, I love using what we have.
Thanks so much for linking to Let’s Dish!

    • Diane says

Oh my goodness…isn’t it amazing how wind can be so strong to pop a tree out?!
Thanks for your kind words Kathleen!
      Blessings!

  20. Oh those branches are simply stunning! What a happy find right outside your door!! I know you will enjoy them every minute they are blooming on your piano!! Thanks for sharing your good fortune 🙂

    • Diane says

Haha! They made their way to the sun room. You’ll see them again in another vignette! 🙂 Thanks for popping by Jennifer! 😀

  21. Love your spring branches! There’s just nothing prettier or more spring-like than white flowering branches. Cut some similar from my back yard and will be featuring them in an upcoming post at Friendship, Life and Style. Glad I found your blog!
    Heather

    • Diane says

That’s wonderful Heather!! I’ll look forward to seeing them!!
Thanks for your nice compliment! 🙂

Hope your week has been Extraordinary!

  22. Oh those branches are so gorgeous!! I love them on the piano.

    • Diane says

      Thanks Rachel!! 😉
      Hope your day is Extraordinary!

  23. LUCY says

They look amazing D…I’m a little jealous…nothing blooming here yet…:(

    • Diane says

Nothing blooming yet?!! Oh No!! Your blog oozes sweetness and spring….I would never guess!

  24. I love your flowers and trees! So pretty! I am a new follower from southern charm! I would love for you to check out my blog and hopefully you will want to follow me back. Nicole!

    • Diane says

How nice of you to say that Nicole! 😉
      Blessings!

  25. This is really beautiful. I wish I could have a tree for me to cut a few for our home. Here where we live lots of tree a long side of the road with white flowers. I do not know what they are. I kept on telling my husband as we are driving “oh please cut some for me!” until he gets tired listened to me saying it then he answered “yeaa..they will cut your toe for that!” (LOL) Yesterday I went to Home Depot and I bought Azelea with purplish flower. I love shrub flowers. As you said; they are easy to arrange in a vase. I do not see that they sell these flowers in a flower shop. I am looking but never found any. Anyway, thank you for this beautiful post.

    Ellya

    • Diane says

You are so sweet Ellya! I surely don’t want you to get your toes cut off!! 😉 I think the only Azaleas you can purchase in a flower shop are some pink or red ones as a small plant in a pot. I grew the most beautiful white Azaleas back in Michigan. The purest white. So stunning. Enjoy your purple ones!
Thank you for stopping by! Hope you have An Extraordinary Day!

  26. I love spring!!!
There is so much we can do and so nature shows off so nicely. Love how simple, yet elegant your decor turned out.

    • Diane says

Awww thanks Jay!! How sweet of you to say that!
      Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!!

  27. kelly says

love the simplicity of it very pretty

    • Diane says

      Sometimes simple is best. Yes?
Thanks for stopping by Kelly with your kind words! 😉

  28. Kadee says

For you it is the flowering pear… for me, it’s the flowering crab apple trees. Both are glorious but the apple blossoms bring back childhood memories for me. They were plentiful in our town and the bus stop had several trees nearby. I couldn’t wait to inhale them each morning. And teachers would receive bouquets of them from some of their students with the ends of the branches wrapped in wet paper towel and then covered in wax paper.. all secured with a rubber band. Good memories! Congrats on your anniversary coming up… I just celebrated mine several months ago! Love blogging! Drop on by mine when you get a chance… I would love that!

    • Diane says

I love apple/crab apple trees too. They just aren’t the very first to flower. And there fragrance is wonderful. I remember kids bringing those and lilacs by the handful to teachers too. In our neigborhood, it was foil around the wet paper towel. Haha!!
Thanks for your good wishes! Congrats to you and best wishes for many many more!!

  29. Your pear sprigs are so fresh and lovely (and so are the little glimpses of your home in your photos). I like decorating with flowers from my yard too. I don’t have Bradford pears, but I do have really yummy edible pears…and the good news this spring is that their flowers are pretty too. I pruned some of my fruit trees late this year; their branches were covered with blossom buds. I brought some inside my warm house, set them in water, and within a day or two, pretty blossoms! It’s fun. Lynaea @ EveryDayBloom.com

    • Diane says

How wonderful that you have edible pears! Yummy!! I love being able to force blossoms into bud. Isn’t it just the best thing to make a heart happy?
Thanks for your sweet remarks, Lynaea!
      Blessings!

  30. So THAT’S what those wonderful trees are! Many years ago, someone got the idea to plant them along the ugliest, most industrialized street in our town, so for just a week each year it would really be spectacular. Then the utility company began cutting them (savagely), in an attempt to force the branches to grow around the power wires! Putting the branches on display is a wonderful idea, and your blog is a very lovely and inspiring place. I’m visiting from Mockingbird Hill Cottage, and it’s nice to meet you!

    • Diane says

I’m guessing that it was popular twenty or more years ago to plant those trees. They certainly are a bright spot.
Thanks for popping by Jeanmarie and leaving your sweet words! It’s nice to meet you too!
      Wishing you an extraordinary weekend!

  31. Simple and elegant. I can almost smell the freshness of spring.

    • Diane says

😀 Gotta love the goodness of spring!
Thanks for flying over Gardenbug! 😉 Hope your weekend is spectacular!

  32. Just beautiful! And I can abide the smell of those pear trees either, but they are lovely 🙂

    • Diane says

Haha! They are lovely, regardless! 😉
      Hope your weekend is fabulous!

  33. This is my first time visiting your blog and my first time joining in on Claudie’s meme, A Favorite Thing. I love flowering branches so much, and yours look lovely. We are pretty much bloomed out here in Florida because we had spring in March, but I always feel it lingers through events like these with friends in other states. Thanks for sharing.

    XO,

    Sheila

    • Diane says

Your spring does come early…but I have never been to Florida beyond March (sometime between Nov-March I would visit)…so I had no idea you would be bloomed out now. Enjoy your warm weather while we bear through the 50 degree temps. Haha! Those sounded balmy a few months ago! 😉
Thanks for stopping by Sheila and for taking time to share your lovely words!
      Blessings!

  34. Our pear tree is in bloom toot. I love that you have a starter in a vase. beautiful! Hugs Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things hop xo

      Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  35. Shane says

I think Pear tree blossom is the sweetest – I love it’s simplicity.
Those lovely old trees lining the street must be a magical sight in Spring.
    A lovely post Diane
    Shane ♥

    • Diane says

It may not be the ‘sweetest’ fragrance…but it’s loveliness as the first white and early blooms always warms my heart.
Thank you for your kind words Shane…and thank you for taking the time to leave them here for me to enjoy.
      Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!

  36. Spring blossoms are wonderful and your arrangement is so pretty : )

    • Diane says

It’s funny how I have some faux blossoms in the house that look real…real enough that people check to see. But, when the real deal comes in the house, they look…faux. Haha!!
Thanks for you warm words, Debra! Hope your weekend is Extraordinary.

  37. No pear trees around my property, nor any other kind of flowering tree. 🙁 The branches look stunning in the vase on your piano.

    • Diane says

Awwww….I wish you had some too. 🙁
Thank you for your sweet words, Melanie!
      Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!

thanks so much for joining my party this week!
    Blessings to you,
    Doni

    • Diane says

The mandolin is quite old. My mother acquired in college when from an elderly gentleman.
Thanks for your kind encouraging remarks Doni!

  45. I love your spring vignette, and I kept looking at your small framed print, thinking it looked familiar. I had to laugh when I read a little further–I did the SAME thing to the cards we received from Williamsburg! I have the same print framed and in my office at work. We are visiting Williamsburg in a couple of weeks…I can’t wait!

    • Diane says

Haha! That is too funny Martha! 😀 I really would like to frame them when I can afford to. But, these really is an inexpensive way to make it work. Enjoy your art and your trip. We love going to CW in May. Have a great time! 😀

  46. Beautiful! I love all the blossoms that are out right now. Spring time is so wonderful, it makes you feel alive! Williamsburg is one of my favorites too! I am so blessed to live close to such an amazing place 🙂 Thank you for the fabulous decorating ideas! Krista @ A Handful of Everything

There are a few small towns like that near me – love visiting them – it is quite an event to stroll down those streets – your piano-top vignette looks wonderful! Love the idea of hiding the thermostat – very clever! I do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,

    • Diane says

Thanks Mary Beth! You are always so kind and encouraging! 😀

  51. Yes, those Bradford Pear trees have the worst smell! We cut a small cedar tree for Christmas once, it came from hubby’s grandparent’s farmland. Oh, did it stink!

    • Diane says

Yes, some can be awful, others only mildly. I wonder what it is that causes the difference. Hmmm.
      Blessings!

  52. So pretty – thanks so much for sharing at Monday Funday! Take care, Laura

        Best wishes,
        Natasha in Oz

  56. I love the blooms from my pear tree, but when I brought the branches in they did not smell pretty at all! I made a bouquet for my outdoor table instead.

    • Diane says

Haha! I discovered that too DeeAnna…but not until after I had arranged, photographed, and created the blog post. Sometime later I wondered what I was smelling, so I put them in my sun room where I could close the door and still enjoy them through the glass door. It’s funny that we did not notice the ‘aroma’ at first. It seemed to get stronger and then after a few days fade a way. I have to say that they surely are the prettiest blossoms though.

  57. Well slap my forehead in a “duh” moment. We have pear trees, and cherry, and crab apple. My husband always prunes them, and not once did I think about bringing them in to force them. Your vignette is very pretty. Thank you for sharing it at to What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great week!

    Hugs,
    Deborah

I know what you mean exactly!! We grew up with a pear tree in our garden which was the lovelies thing ever. And never once did we trim any branches. Haha!! This year I tried forcing my weeping cheery tree trimmings…but I only got a few almost sprouts.
      Blessings!

  58. I love the softness the branches bring. So beautiful! Thanks for sharing at Silver Pennies Sundays! x

  62. Those flowers are so pretty! I completely agree with you… There’s nothing prettier than the flowering trees of Spring. All the magnolia trees just bloomed here and I love to drive around and see them!

    • Diane says

Our magnolia trees bloomed…I got a few photos but the light wasn’t good so I though I’d get to it a little later and we had a hard freeze that night and they turned brown overnight. It was sad. Thanks for popping by Jessie! Hope is your day is Extraordinary!

I have two huge bradford pears in my yard, but my favorite is the sapling from about 3 years ago, that is now planted in the back yard, and is taller than the gutters on the house. 🙂 it grew from a seed, all on it’s own. It makes my heart sing when I look at it. It didn’t bloom this year, as it was moved in the heat of the summer last year, I’m not surprised. But I expect it to bloom next year!

    haven’t noticed the smell…hmmmm

      How beautiful Gail!!
I seriously do not think they all smell bad. Until I moved here I had never noticed it before. I do think they have the loveliest blossoms, hands down.
How cool is it to have grown you own tree from seed. WOW! That’s amazing!

  64. This looks beautiful! Your house is so charming and serene! The crispness of the flowers against your wall color looks amazing! Thank You so much for sharing at A Bouquet of Talent this week! Happy Friday!
