Was this past weekend your big “get the yard in shape” working weekend?

Traditionally Memorial Day {Weekend} is when mulch gets spread, shrubs, and lawns get trimmed, flowers get planted, the pool gets opened, and everyone gets ready for summer outdoor fun.  Is that your tradition?  We tend to spend plenty of time “playing” in the yard.  But, gardening and yard work for our family starts as soon as the weather is spring like, and flower planting begins usually around Mother’s Day.

This year has been a bit challenging for me, with limited finances, living in a new town, and renting a home.  But, wherever I live, planting flowers makes my house a my home.   Mother’s Day weekend we went greenhouse and garden center hopping, except for gas, that is a free activity.  And besides creating container gardens, this is one of my favorite things to do.  It’s true.  And what’s even better….my husband enjoys it too!  I didn’t buy near the quantity or types of plants that I have been accustomed to in the past.  But, I did have fun creating containers over the past few weekends.  And now my house is starting to look a lot more like home.  Except for one-half of my backyard being in repair following the incident with the digging machine. {sigh!}

Today I thought it would be fun to show you how I put containers together and some of my tried and true tips.  And a fun and unexpected way I save money.

Here are the plants I selected.

Tomorrow….yes I’m a tease….

I’ll come back and fill you in on all the fun and nitty-gritty details on how to make a great container garden.

And for those of you who need to know…back when I lived in the mitten state, I got my Master Gardener Certificate from Michigan State University.  My volunteer hours were all  dedicated to container gardening.  Giving demos at the farmers’ market, teaching classes at the Art Museum and for community education, as well as demos and talks for garden clubs.  That was fun, so I thought it would be good to do a little bit of that here.

As the spring turns into summer and summer into fall,  I’ll keep you posted on the progress of my containers.  And what I’m learning in my new spot in the shade.

  • Do you container garden?
  • What are your favorite container plants?
  • What is your {biggest} container challenge?

Joyfully!
