Earth laughs in flowers.

Queen Anne’s Lace

Abundant along the roadsides, this lovely lacy flower has a bit of folklore attached to it.

It’s said that Queen Anne, wife of James I of England was a great lace maker and one day pricked her finger with a needle while making lace, spilling a drop onto a nearby flower.   Thus, the lore behind the tiny purplish black or deep red floweret gracing the center of the flower.

The plant was introduced to the Americas by early settlers who brought with them seeds for their gardens and medicinal uses.

In the language of flowers,

Queen Anne’s Lace represents sanctuary.

People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.

~Iris Murdoch, A Fairly Honourable Defeat

One of the most pleasant times are those I spend with my husband walking the quiet roadsides and stepping off the pavement to explore the hills and vales.   We love listening to the birds, seductively singing to one another, and the otherwise stillness of the woods. Nature’s flora all around us begs to be explored.  Usually those excursions include my little Nikon pocket camera.  Recently on one of our rambles we came upon a magnificent stand of Queen Anne’s Lace where the lighting, though at the height of the day, was simply lovely.   I couldn’t resist taking many photos and I hope you don’t mind my sharing just a few of them with you.  Emerson was right.  Earth really does laugh in flowers.    And we smile in response.

Following one of these jaunts I arrived home with my spirit renewed, my legs tired, my heart full, and creative juices energized.  Truly I could say,  “What An Extraordinary Day!”

Hope this little reprieve in your day was just what you needed.

What do you do when you need to recharge your ‘batteries’?

Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!
