Don't you love it when you drive down the road on a beautiful breezy day when the sun is shining bright and you see one of those bigger-than-life American flags waving out over the road with all its might?  Or how about passing a house with the front porch festooned with red, white, and blue bunting, and giant urns filled with red geraniums and lots of small American flags?  These are the kinds of sightings that make my all-American heart beat faster. I wanted to create that same kind of feeling for the Fourth of July with mason jars and flowers. And I'm pretty happy with the … [Read more...]

Are you getting too serious with your home decor? That's an honest question.  I know I'm guilty of being too serious... of working too hard at getting just the right furniture, window treatments, colors, style, texture, and art for our homes.  It's pretty serious business just choosing the "right" paint color. Today I'm going to nudge you to put a bit of whimsy in your home and, at least for summer, have fun with your home decor. Since it's summer and we often dream of spending time at the lake or ocean... I'm going to show you how to add a whimsical coastal touch, and some fun … [Read more...]

There's no doubt about it.  Lately I'm "into" mason jar lids.  Within the past several weeks, I've added knobs to lids here and here. And I've even created Christmas ornaments with mason jar lids.  So, it should be no surprise to you that I'm doing something fun with lids again. This time, I'm "hooked" on hanging my Ball mason jars.     I have this fun wall art that hangs over my sofa.  It kind of reminds me of a seaside fishing town... albeit a very simplified version.     This year I decided to go with a coastal vibe for Christmas and pulled out my … [Read more...]

You asked for it!! You got it!! A tutorial for creating your own Mason jar pleated collars from book pages.  I confess to having fun dreaming up this one.  You can click to see how I used these sweet pleated collars for a simple snowball viburnum table vignette and for my book page party tablescape.  It all came about as I was creating the book page tablescape and though I wanted the Mason jars to hold flowers...they just looked 'naked.'  The book page collars dressed them up in high fashion.  And besides....I love pleats.   Do you, too?     Are you ready to create your own Mason Jar Pleated … [Read more...]

Whenever I see my blue Mason jars I think of... sparkling blue waters of the Big Lake, summertime, and sea glass from the Mediterranean*. Decorating Mason jars can be one of the easiest ways to add a bit of summer to a corner that needs brightening, or even the table.     Recently I created an extraordinary tablescape with my vintage Mason jars and book pages.   That got me thinking that most of you didn't see this post of decorating Mason jars with burlap that I wrote late last summer.  If you're looking for a splash of coastal color in your decor, you'll enjoy a few of these ideas.  Be … [Read more...]

Usually, this time of year I am up to my eyeballs creating fantastic spaces for kids.  I would hardly have time to notice the beauty of creation around me.  But, this year....I am having so much fun picking blossoms, creating fun tablescapes, and enjoying springtime.     I love how the pink detail on the plates comes alive with the pink crabapple blossoms.     Just for fun, I put together a centerpiece for the table using book pages and my vintage Ball Mason jars. The jars usually take residence on the shelves in my laundry room.  They are so happy in their … [Read more...]

Mother's Day comes at one of my most favorite times of the year... flower planting time. If I could give Mom the ultimate gift for her special day, I'd create an English cottage-style garden with a white picket fence filled with all her favorite pretty flowers. It would be so fun to design, shop for, and create. Around Mother's Day all the garden shops and greenhouses are brimming over with the most beautiful flowers and plants of the season.  All that goodness makes my heart swell with joy and anticipation.  I don't know that there is anything I like better than to go greenhouse … [Read more...]

With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner I wanted to inspire you to create some mason jar happiness to dress up your little corner of the world.  And throw in a few riddles... just for fun!     What do you get when you cross poison ivy with a four-leaf clover? A rash of good luck.   Last year I received some lovely green Ball mason jars for a Mother's Day blog hop.  I also received blue, and purple, and clear jars, and never got around to doing anything with the green jars.  I knew I wanted to use them for St. Patrick's Day. My plan wasn't to do anything … [Read more...]

Valentine's Day... It seems people fall into three categories:  Love it. Indifferent. Hate it. Like most holidays... we bring baggage to the day that colors the way we see it.  The twist with Valentine's Day is that it's about love and romance.  And others say it's just a commercial holiday that puts pressure on us. Where do you fall on the Valentine's Day continuum? I decided that Valentine's Day is a great time to shower love and kindness on our friends and family. Those who are indifferent or hate the day... I've never seen them protest a thoughtful gift. And the lovers.... they eat up … [Read more...]

Today I'm joining up with some of my blogging friends for an extravaganza of Mason Jar Christmas Gift Ideas Each blogger has chosen a different theme and because my niece is having a baby mid January, I thought it would be fun to create a mason jar gift for her. Since my niece has selected green and pink for her baby girl... that became my color theme for the gift. I wasn't exactly sure what I was going to do when I got started.  But, in shopping for the gifts to put inside the jar I came across this green rubber bath ducky and knew that it was the key to decorating my mason jar. Polka dots … [Read more...]

I am in love with Christmas trees on cars. So when my wonderful blogging friend, Malia from Yesterday on Tuesday asked if I'd like to join her for a Christmas Trees on Cars Blog Hop... of course I said yes... without another thought.   Trick or Treat is always a highlight as October begins her slide to November. It's always fun choosing candy (that I would like) and giving handfuls out to the princesses and supermen that ring the door bell or call, "Trick or treat!"at my door. Since I'm all about the treats and not the tricks (I'll leave the tricks to those of you who are naturally practical jokers), I've come up with a fun gift or treat container to keep on your desk or display somewhere in your home.  And yes... it's in one of my favorite containers... a mason jar. Today I'm joining with a wonderful group of bloggers to … [Read more...]

I received the same Ball® Jars being given away.  All opinions are my own.   Did you know that I absolutely LOVE mason jars? Back before they were popular, my aunt, when downsizing gave me a few boxes filled with vintage Ball® jars.  I thought it was the best gift ever, and used them to decorate my sweet saltbox.  Several moves later, the jars were popping up all over the place and I found them among my boxes and started using them here and here. As much as I love those vintage Ball jars, my heart would pitter-patter whenever I spied an amethyst or purple mason jar.  However, I never saw one in … [Read more...]

Mason jars are a staple of summer entertaining and decor.  Sometime ago, I was blessed with many authentic vintage Ball jars and use them as flower vases and hurricanes for tea candles all summer long.  Are Mason jars a part of your summer, too?   Last summer, I decided to dress up a Mason jar with pleated book page collars.  So many people commented that they wanted to know how to make them, that I put together a tutorial.  On the chance that you, too, might enjoy dressing up your Mason jars.... here's the tutorial.   And now...on to our party!   Mary Beth from Cupcakes and … [Read more...]

A few weeks ago I did a bit of entertaining. As I was preparing my home I looked around and thought, "That 4th of July decor has got to go!"   I had been noticing it.  It was sort of sticking out like a sore thumb.  But, if no one was coming over, I could put it off.  And I did.  It's not like I didn't have a plan up my sleeve.  For nearly two months I've been wanting to get out my old blue canning jars and play around with them.  Finally I did. My guests came. My guests left.  And the clouds came and I didn't take any pictures.  I need a sunny day in order to make pretty photographs for you with my pocket … [Read more...]
