What is your source of joy and delight?

Delight yourself in the Lord from Psalm 37

Please “pin” and share this image.

 Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4

More than anything God wants us to find our delight in him.

He wants to be our source of joy.

He want to be the one we go to for everything.

He wants to be our all in all.

The funny thing about this…

God leaves it all up to us.

He knows the benefit for us when we delight in him.

Yet, he doesn’t make us delight in him.

He does, though, give us every opportunity to know him, to delight in his handiwork, and to receive his amazing love.

Devotional on Psalm 37 - Delight yourself in the Lord

For a long time, I focused on the second part of this verse…

And He will give you the desires of your heart.

You, too?

Let’s face it…. most of us are self-seeking in every way.

Sure, we love and care for others.

At least we try to, most of the time.

Often, if we’re honest, we are more concerned with our personal comfort.

We have a “bless me, God” list that includes… happiness, good relationships, health, financial resources, and so on.

Right now, I desperately, want my husband to be hired at a good job… for our car to be mechanically sound… for this blog to bring in more money… to live in my own house… to get back my good health…

These are the desires of my heart.

What’s interesting…God doesn’t want us to focus on the second part of this verse.

The desires of your heart are not an exclusive all-inclusive resort state-of-being.

Instead it’s the overflow of the first part of this verse…

Delight yourself in the Lord;

The desires of your heart....

I’m reminded of another verse, also found in the Psalms…

O God, you are my God, I seek you,
    my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Psalm 63:1 NRSV

When we want God to that degree….we find delight in him.

When we turn our eyes to see the beauty in our world…we find delight in him.

When we receive his love and grace and mercy…we find delight in him.

And when we find delight in him…we just have to tell somebody.

It bubbles up, it overflows, it’s a joy and happiness we cannot contain.

Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of your heart.

Psalm 37:4

What are the desires of your heart?

What is your source of joy and delight?

    3. For a peace that has come when I just let go of situations at work that I have no control over…

    7. for answered prayers

    • Oh Debbi….I rejoice with you at what God has been doing in your life. Doesn’t it seem the more you surrender the more he gives peace? Praying and trusting with you in our faithful trustworthy God!
      [hugs]

  2. I had to smile at what you said about focusing on the “have the desires of your heart” part of the verse. So true. That was my motivator when I was younger. But although my want list remains pretty much the same as always…security, happiness in our family, children/grandchildren who love and serve the Lord and and restoration of health…my desire is certainly becoming wanting more of those deep deep moments I have enjoyed with Him. Ironically, the closeness that has developed thru the years has mostly been due to financial strain, uncertainty over the future, strained family relationships, disappointments and health problems!! So today I am grateful for what He has given AND for what He has, at times, taken away. That must add up to at least seven 😉 also for safety in travel, vacation that restores our minds and, believe it or not, those who came and cleaned our home the day before our return!

  3. Ah Suzi….I do agree…closeness seems to come when we need to lean in harder on HIM. I guess that’s because we are more open to HIM in those moments, huh? I rejoice with you in the goodness of your trip and the pleasant surprise upon your arrival. :0

    May your week be filled with JOY!

  4. Bobbi Duncan says:

    I know what you mean about desires of the heart…we all do it, especially at the worst of times, and then we feel so guilty. I often think about something my paster said many years ago–“God knows your every TRUE need. He may not come on your time, but He is always right on time”. That has helped me so much in my life, to just be still and know God is doing what needs to be done. When we quiet ourselves and think upon God, trusting Him to give us what He feels we need, suddenly the burdens seem lighter and the joy greater. Oh, now I am becoming tearful, thinking how fortunate we are to know our God. We are so lucky! am so thankful that 1. we are able to attend our beautiful Grandson’s 1st. birthday party, as he lives far from us and we don’t get the enjoyment of his company very often. We are so excited! 2 That when I wake each day I know I am blessed that God brought me true love the day my Michael came into my life 9 years ago. He has the kindest, sweetest heart, that has helped make up for all the hard days that came before. 3. For my children, and the fact that they were so easy to raise. That they are Godly children makes me rejoice daily and is every parents prayer. 4.That, although we have had quite a bit of rain most of last week, it gave me the opportunity to stay around the house and get our storage cabinets put together so that we can finally locate things in the basement…yippy! 5. That I was able to help a friend in need this week. 6. That I am blessed to be able to read the “I am thankful for” messages of others , which gives me the joy to pray that all have their prayers answered, as God sees they should be, and to know you all are hoping mine are answered as well. 7. That the world is full of miracles and we get to witness so many of them.Oh my, It is 3:30 am, but I will rest more peacefully because I am happy to have shared my joys with you. A blessed week to all.
