For the past several years I’ve been seeing sweet hand pies popping up here and there.  They look delicious and fun and imperfect.

Maybe it’s their rustic imperfection that has me drawn to them.

After playing around with a few butter pie crust recipes, I settled on this one.  It provided the most wonderful envelop for our savory chicken pot pie, so I thought I would sweeten it and try my hand at…yes…hand pies.  Sweet hand pies to be exact.   But, now that I’ve made these…I see some savory hand pies on the horizon.

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, I decided to shape my hand pies into hearts.  And because cherry seems so February, I chose it for the pie filling.

For all you true bakers and fruit filling purists….I didn’t have all day to make these pies,  I wanted to keep the cost down, and because I wanted you to know you could make these too, I chose to buy my cherry pie filling rather than cook it from scratch.   I purchased my pie filling from Aldi and it was good and not too sweet.   Lately I’ve been having fun making my own pie crusts, but you can just as easily pick up pie crusts from the store to use for your heart hand pies.

Hand Pies for Valentine's Day :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

My good friend just happened to have a set of heart-shaped cookie cutters that she let me use.  That made the pie creating experience a wee bit faster than if I had hand cut all the pies into heart shapes.  Yay!

Okay, now that we’ve gotten all those details out-of-the-way….

Let’s make heart hand pies for Valentine’s Day!

Here’s what you need to make your own sweet heart hand pies:

Baking Instructions:

 To assemble your hand pies…

Note:  I chose to make all my pies look a little bit different, so I used different sized hearts.  For reference, the larger hand pie was cut with the largest heart cookie cutter which is about 5 inches.  When it’s all said and done…the men liked that size.  The ladies preferred the smaller size which was about three inches.

I was able to make six 5 inch and four 3 inch hand pies from a double pie crust recipe.

Assembly Directions for Making Heart Hand Pies :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Lay out your refrigerated pie crust, or roll out your hand-made pie crust.  I used half the pie crust from the recipe for the bottoms of these six large hearts.  If your crust is purchased you will use one crust.
  2. Cut your heart shapes into the pie crust.  These will be your pie bottoms.
  3. Lay your cut hearts out on the Silpat covered cookie sheet.
  4. Cut more hearts from the second half of the pie crust recipe or one crust from your packaged crusts.
  5. Using the smaller heart-shaped cookie cutters, cut heart designs into your crusts.  You can free hand some if you wish, I made an “X” in one of mine.
  6. Prepare all the crust tops with designs as you wish.
  7. Place your cherry pie filling on your prepared pie bottoms.  Be careful to allow room for the crusts to come together and seal.
  8. Lay your decorated crust tops over the cherry filling.
  9. Using a fork, press down around the edge of your heart pies to seal the edges.
  10. Brush an egg wash (one egg with a tablespoon of water, whipped) lightly on your pies and sprinkle sugar on top.  Pop your pies in the oven for 18-20 minutes and watch to see that they don’t get too brown.  Cool on a rack when they are done.

Pour a glass of milk or make a cup of tea and enjoy a delicious heart hand pie.  Yum!!

  9. Joey says

Wasn’t sure what a hand pie was. What a cute and delicious idea!

    • Diane says

Joey…I guess we call them hand pies because we pick them up to eat rather than use our fork. That can be dangerous. Forks slow down the time it takes to indulge. A pie in hand is like two on the fork. LOL! Hope you try making some…they are delish!!
Thanks for popping by! Hope your day is Extraordinary!!
