I’m so excited to share the Laundry Room Makeover Reveal with you!!

Decor for Laundry Room Makeover :: Vintage Ball Jars & Clorax Bottle & Clothesins :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Some of you may have been impatient with me as I shared my laundry room makeover in bits and pieces.  It all started last summer and then finally a few weeks ago, I made up for lost time.

Have you ever wanted to makeover a room, but had no funds in your account?

Don’t let that stop you.  My zero budget forced me to get creative with what I had around my house and proved to me, once again, that I don’t need to let the lack of money prevent me from making my home extraordinary.

My laundry room makeover was a fun creative challenge.   And I know you are dying to see how it all has come together.

So, without further ado…

The Reveal!

Laundry Room Makeover :: The Reveal :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Ahhh!  This feels so much better than…..

The Before :: Laundry Room Makeover :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

this!

Sometimes it is good to be reminded of where it all started.

The photo doesn’t tell all.  When I first moved into the house, the bi-fold doors will still on the laundry closet.   And though it probably isn’t really clear to you in this picture, even here, in order to load and unload the washer I had to reach around the wall.  It was super awkward.  I’m grateful that the bi-fold doors came down….it helped a wee bit.  But, when the contractors removed the washer and dryer to install new sewer piping for the basement it allowed us to be able to do a little bit of work.

Since we rent the house, we weren’t able to do a large-scale renovation.  But, my husband did enlarge the opening as much as he could which did two things.  One:: allowed us to slide the appliances back in place without a shoehorn…and this is no joke. Two:: we were able to get into the space finally and clean it well and paint the walls which had only been primed, with several coats of paint.  We had just a tiny window of time before the contractors would move everything back in place.  So, one night in the midst of preparing for VBS, we stopped at Lowe’s, choose a paint color in ten minutes, cleaned the space, and threw the first coat on the wall.  The following night I painted again.

There was one more silver lining in this project.  I was finally able to get the yucky washer out and enjoy using mine.  And you know how good that felt.  Having my own washer, and not being wedged up against the wall in order to load and unload the washer, was wonderful.  It took the dread out of doing laundry.   I guess so much so that the project came to a halt.  Well, maybe that and the fact that I had an incredible case of poison ivy on my arms and legs that took forever to heal.

Laundry Closet to Room Makeover :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

The addition of pale yellow really worked to make the closet a bright spot.  Especially as there is no wiring in the area, I couldn’t even add a lamp or other hanging fixture for light and brightness.  The color really serves to warm things up.

The swan border easily came down on the adjacent hall walls for painting.  Yay!   I didn’t have much of the yellow paint left as I used it to paint a wall in the guest room last winter.  So I added nearly a quart of white paint to what was left.  Thankfully, it was just enough. The walls really are creamier than they look here and help transition to the other the nearby areas.  Isn’t it fun when things work out like that?

Longerger Laundry Baskets :: Laundry Room Makeover :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

My laundry closet and adjacent hallway have now morphed into a real laundry room!

This view helps you to see the whole room.  It’s not a large space, but there’s plenty of room for sorting laundry.  And I have some natural daylight, too.

I’m not a fan of the floor….it’s a little busy for me…but it didn’t need to be replaced after the sewer project, so I live with it.  Blue is better than some other possibilities, so we’ll give thanks for that.

It’s hard to see in the photo above, but I even decorated the windowsill with a few of my older blue Mason jars filled with clothespins.

Laundry Room Makeover :: Vintage Ball Mason Jar Decor :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

There is a bit of a theme….if you can see it coming together.   It’s sort of a cottage collected look with the added whimsy of clothespins as art, in jars, and on the “clothesline.”  With the black fabric skirt over the washer and dryer, and the chalkboard art, I’m pleased the way it all came together.

Cottage Style Laundry Room Makeover :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

My Longaberger Laundry Hamper looks fabulous sitting against the wall there and nicely complements the old wood frame on the chalkboard.  Since it holds a lot of laundry, my space usually looks pretty good…until I spill the contents for sorting, that is. [wink]

There are shelves over the washer and dryer, but reaching up for was awkward and my gallon jug of white vinegar didn’t fit on the bottom shelf, so instead of sitting the cleaners on the floor, I put them in my old copper boiler.  I picked it up a long time ago at the Allegan Antiques Fair (MI).  The bench upon which it sits I made.

#LaundryRoomMakeover #LaundryRoomDecor :: Washboards :: AnExtraordianaryDay.net

To complete the vignette… I added some old washboards I inherited from my parents.  A laundry room with a vintage throw-back couldn’t be without these icons of the past.

Whimsical Laundry Room Wall Art - #LaundryRoomMakeover - AnExtraordinaryDay.net

My plan was for the laundry room to have a whimsical flair.  I had a fun playing around with clothespins, creating the wall art on the left, and hanging vintage ladies’ hankies from the clothesline strung down the wall.

Whimsical Laundry Room Banner :: #LaundryRoomMakeover ::AnExtraordinaryDay.net

The banner was created with leftover fabric from making the pleated skirt to hide the dryer vent and the washer shut-off valves.  The pennants were the same pattern I used for this banner.  Because the fabric was just a little lightweight, I fused some fabric left over from my studio table skirt to stiffen it a bit, and then hot glued the pennants directly to the jute.   And then for fun, I clipped some vintage hankies I had to the line.   You’ll notice that I also created some fabric roses to hang at the ends of the clothesline and at the top of the chalkboard, to hide the nails and screws.

Vintage Ball Jar Decor for the Laundry Room Makeover :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Over time I have collected Longaberger Baskets with red accent weaving.  Most of these are Christmas edition baskets.  Together, with the vintage Mason jars, they are the perfect complement to the colorful Mary Englebreit fabric hanging below the shelf.

This turned out great!! It is great when you can shop at home with all of the things one collects and reuse!!!Budgets make us more creative!!!

    • Diane says

You are so right, Renee. For years I’ve had boxes of those vintage blue jars just sitting. I’m glad I realized that displaying them in mass would be a good thing! Thanks for your warm words of encouragement!
      Blessings!

Amazing! Warm-wonderfully creative, and a lovely space to do laundry. I love how you make ordinary into extraordinary!

And I love how you are the consummate cheerleader! Thank you Tracy for your affirmations.

  3. Lani says

    Good morning Diane!
I LOVE the way your laundry room came out! I totally get the “having your own washer” part. When we bought this house it came with a washer/dryer. They were practically brand new front loaders, but they weren’t “mine.” Mine were sitting in the basement. Last Christmas hubby and my oldest son surprised me by switching them out and I’ve been a happy lark ever since. Isn’t it funny how we get attached to our appliances?
I’m so happy that you now have a lovely laundry place to call your own 🙂
    Blessings!
    Lani

    • Diane says

Haha! Lani, I’m so glad you “get” it! 🙂
Thank you for rejoicing with me and for your sweet words of encouragement. 🙂
      Wishing you an Extraordinary weekend!!
      ~Diane

  4. Judi says

It’s amazing Diane! As they say, necessity is the mother of invention and you really took your creative energy to extraordinary heights!!! The clothespin theme is just perfect for a laundry room and you know how I love your chalkboard! I feel bittersweet for you ~ all this work and now to not enjoy it for yourself 🙁 Wishing you extraordinary blessings!! Judi

    • Diane says

You are so kind, Judi!! Thank you for commiserating with me. It is bittersweet. But…I’m glad I ‘finished the job.’ And I have the blog to help me remember the fun…without a pile of dirty laundry. [wink]

  5. Carey says

I love what you did with your laundry room! It looks awesome! The clothespins and bell jars are just beautiful!
Thank you for sharing, and inspiring me to do mine…course mine is in my basement with a concrete floor and stone walls, but it has me thinking…

    • Diane says

      Awww…thanks Carey! 🙂
My basement has finished walls….that’s a blessing….but don’t let that stop you. Embrace those stone walls. Remember that in the design world, people would pay big money for that look. Consider them to be the backdrop for something colorful. And an outdoor rug will also brighten those floors. Look now for the end of the year patio clearances…you might find one for a song. Keep me posted. I’d love to hear how your creative juices pull it together.
      Hope your weekend is extraordinary!

  6. Jean says

I loved seeing the entire laundry room! I’m still inspired to do something with our basement laundry area…just have to figure out what (and how to get my husband on board with the idea).

    • Diane says

Thank you Jean!!! I hope you can get him on your side. 😉 It really does make a huge difference in a routine task. Hopefully, we’ll see the transformation on your blog. 🙂
      Blessings!
      ~Diane

  7. Your laundry room is truly EXTRAORDINARY!! You did a fantastic job. I just love the mason jars and baskets. The copper tub and wash boards put this over the top. I love all your touches and be sure to tell hubby, he gets an atta boy, too.
    Have a blessed weekend, Ginger

    • Diane says

Oh Ginger…I will tell him. He’ll have a cute grin in response. 😉
Thank you for your kind words and for noticing all the details. [hugs]
      Hope your weekend is Extraordinary!!

What a wonderful work of decorating art!! I love it. You’re able to “see” the way things look while they are still in your head. That is an extraordinary giftt!!!

    • Diane says

You just put the biggest smile on my face, Jan! Thank you soooo much!!! You said the nicest things.

  9. Suzi says

so sweet! i also have vintage objects in my laundry room and my collection of blue ball jars 🙂 love the inherited wash boards & copper boiler…can’t believe you made the bench, you got some skills girl 😉

    • Diane says

Oh Suzi! I bet your laundry room is darling!!
Thanks for your sweet words of encouragement.
Years ago, my friend and I took evening woodshop at the high school. We made all kinds of things and didn’t have a clue when we started. But, we learned how to start from rough lumber and join and glue and plane the wood for our projects. It was a great lesson and we loved it. We were so sad when the shop was closed and the great old machines were sold as the district had a new training school for kids to attend instead. Progress they say. 😉
      Hope your weekend is blessed!
      ~Diane

  10. Donna Krobock says

Your laundry room is awesome Diane!! We have so many of the same items: Longaberger, washboards, blue ball jars. I just know we would have fun shopping at each other’s house:-) Who knows, maybe the future might find us living closer to each other. Have a wonderful weekend!
    ~Donna

    • Diane says

That is soooo fun that we share many of the same things, Donna!!
Wouldn’t that be something if we ended up living closer? Wow!
Thanks for your sweet words. 🙂
      May your weekend be Extraordinary!

  11. Marcia @Gathering at the Table says

I’ve been waiting all day to see this, Diane. BRAVO!! Love every detail, the jars, the banner, and of course, the chalkboard. Enjoy!

    • Diane says

Sorry it was a little late. I didn’t expect that it would take me so long to finish putting this post together. :-/
Thanks for your encouraging remarks, Marcia!
      Blessings!
      ~Diane

  12. Mel says

🙂 MOST excellent!! I’da been sad if the jars and baskets hadn’t made their appearance. Clever idea to drop some clothespins in! The washtub and boards…too cute. And it’s just the right amount of STUFF to make the space happy and friendly. Inviting, even. 😉 Lemme know if it works and you suddenly are outta a laundry job.
Yup, very cute. Very kindly that you went to the efforts while people were tromping through as prospective buyers. No doubt the work the two of you have done made the sale easy.*sigh*
I adore the banner with the pinned hankies….how adorable is that!! Now I wanna create something creative with ones I have shoved in drawers.

    • Diane says

Haha! I have a plethora of jars and baskets….so I guess they’d better take a starring role for a change. 😉
You are so kind. My husband will happily do a load or two of his own if needed…he’d take mine too, if I’d let him. LOL But, for the most part, I don’t mind laundry…unless there is a stain. And then forget it!! I got ice cream on my favorite night shirt and didn’t realize it until the next day…I hate those medicine cabinet mirrors! Do you think I could get a chocolate stain out? Nope!!! That is NOT my gift! I used to warn my husband…you get something on your shirt, you might as well throw it away. LOL I said it a lot…don’t think anything ever got thrown away. They became yard and painting clothes. 😉
Fortunately we only had people come through twice and they were the same people. Next…the inspectors, etc. And yes…don’t you think it looks better now than it did? 😀 Haha!
You have hankies too? I have more…a cousin of my mom passed them on to me.
      Blessings….
      ~Diane

  13. What a great change, Diane! Very inspiring! Our laundry room needs a LOT of work.

    • Diane says

Hi LuAnn! When you move to a new house, there are so many things that need work. I hope you’re able to do what you’d like to make it a special place too!
      Hope your weekend is extraordinary!

  14. Diane, it all came together very nicely. the color is sweet and soft on the shelving and goes well with both the red baskets and the blue print flooring {which does not look bad at all}. I like that you added the remaining yellow to some other paint to use it all up. Maybe I can do the same with my awful expensive blue paint…. let’s see, yellow and blue make green, right? I think I have a room for that 😉 And I just love that copper boiler – good thinking on using it to houze your cleaners. Pinning 🙂

    • Diane says

Awww…JoAnn…thank you so much for your sweet thoughts. 🙂
I’ve been seeing that lots of people mix paint….I’d experiment with 1/2 cups of each to see what I got and then decide from there. It’s surely worth a try! Hope it works!!
      Blessings my friend!!
      ~Diane

  15. Gwen says

    • Diane says

      Thank you Carolyn!! 🙂
Believing God today for his wonderful provision. And anticipating a whole clean slate to begin again. 🙂
      Hope your weekend is extraordinary!!

  17. Rochell VanDam says

Diane, I’m so glad you got so many comments on your laundry room. You inspire lots of women to challenge themselves on how to decorate using what you have around the house. If we look around so many things we overlook can be reused into something wonderful….I’m so glad I got to see the before, and now your done. My favorite thing is the chalkboard and the clothespin art….leave it up to you!!

    • Diane says

The clothespin art and the chalkboard are my favorite too! But, I do enjoy having a place to display all those jars that sat in boxes for years!
Thanks for your encouraging words, Rochelle! I can only imagine what we would do if we lived close. Keep praying!
And thanks for all your comments tonight. I’m feeling the love!

I keep thinking, “what do I have that would be just perfect to make such an ordinary room one that is warm and welcoming instead?!

I love the power you have to excite and encourage others! Keep up your cheerful spirit and please do take care of yourself! A little rest to put your feet up never hurt anyone! Thanks for the fun ideas!
