Growing Paperwhites for Christmas is one of my favorite holiday traditions.

There is something about their tall stems and pristine pure white blossoms that dress up a room so perfectly.

Plus, with everything so bleak and barren outdoors, fresh new life and bright green stems just make me happy.

If you would like to add this lovely touch to your holiday decor, you need to purchase your bulbs now.

I have had Paperwhite bulbs start blooming two weeks after planting them….but some years they have taken three weeks or more to bloom.  Bloom time is not an exact science.  But, hopefully this will help you to plan to plant yours soon.

Last year I shared a tutorial detailing how to plant and grow Paperwhites here.

The post appeared mid December…a bit late.

So, I’m sharing it again so you’ll be able to get your bulbs purchased and planted in plenty of time.

I am so blessed that the post was also just featured at Infarrantly Creative.  I know you’ll want to check it out.

Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  1. Wow, gorgeous! And new to me! I’m very excited about reading this post because I’m always looking for new holiday traditions. Where do I find the bulbs?

    • Diane says

Rosann…you should be able to find bulbs in packages or loose at most garden centers…even Lowe’s. I purchased mine from the Agway/feed store.
Have fun with this….we always do!! I’m certain your girls will love it. 😉

  2. I’ve never tried to grow paperwhites, I really should! Thank you for remembering and honoring our veterans today.

    • Diane says

Oh Madge…you should. But, keep in mind they have a bit of a fragrance that can be strong in certain settings. That being said….I am totally smitten with Paperwhites. 😉
      Blessings!!

  3. Gwen says

I grew them in the ground and I don’t think that was the best place. I may have to try this as I have some pots that would work! Oh if only I can remember!!!!
I’m glad you have the tutorial as I forget. And would be fun to plant several pots and see if plant time varies!!
    How cheerful!

    • Diane says

I know you would enjoy it Gwen….they really are so pretty for Christmas.
If you have several pots…I would suggest staggering your planting times…Plant one pot a week for several weeks…that way you’ll have the whole holiday covered. 🙂

My Dad was a veteran. He was in India and then in China. As a cadet he was trained to fly. He was at the instruments when his plane flew The Hump. (Over The Himalayas). He spent time at the base there then ended up in Shanghai. He said the USA gave him a trip around the world. He said though that he felt it took away his youth. He was in four long years. But he wasn’t bitter. We had a neighbor of Norwegian descent who called it Vetners Day so Dad would call it that with a twinkle in his eye. When he was about 83 the Air Force called and said he had such an exemplary military record, the Air Force really needed men like him to re-enlist. Had he considered??? Well, he told them they’d made HIS day to know his country still wanted him at 83!!! Umm they were a bit mixed up!! But it gave Dad such a kick!! Happy Vetners Day to all who serve and have served. I cannot imagine all you have given up for us.

    • Diane says

I love this story of your dad, Gwen! 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing it. Your dad must have been an extraordinary man. I’m pretty sure it’s rubbed off on you, too. 🙂 Praying you have a great day.

  5. I love paperwhites! I’ll have to see if I can find some bulbs to start. Thanks for the inspiration.

    • Diane says

      Blessings!!

  8. Beautiful. I love paperwhites and am growing them too!

    • Diane says

Yay!! Aren’t they just the best for the winter?
Thanks for your kind words Rose!

  9. Mel says

They really are impressive flowers. And the timing of the plant makes them even more impressive in these parts. Everyone should have a touch of fresh blossoms in the thick of winter. It does a soul good methinks. Now if I just didn’t kill indoor plants…. LOL. 😉

    • Diane says

Haha! The beauty of these…it something one can do for a short period of time. And when the blossoms are spent…they get thrown away. Growing houseplants are not usually my forte either. You’d think if I can take care of a garden I could take care a few potted plants. 😉 Mine are usually limited to the Paperwhites and then the Primrose that appear at the grocery store just after Christmas. I love those. 😉 But…keeping them alive until I can plant them in the spring…well it’s a good thing they are hearty. 😉
