Snowball Viburnum :: Easy Flower Arranging Tips :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Don’t you love these Snowball Viburnum blossoms?

My neighbor has a huge bush of them and I was able to clip a few stems to make some floral arrangements for the house.

You might remember last week I shared about Snowball blossoms in the post, Look what the wind blew in.

This time, I wanted to do something that was more traditional, dressy even, for the chest in my great room.

Vintage Biscuit Jar :: Easy flower arranging idea :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

The Snowball bush’s stems are not very orderly in nature and I was trying to figure out how I could arrange them in a compact, as opposed to floppy, manner.  So, I went scouting through the cabinets for a short wide vase of some sort when I discovered this one.  It looks like a biscuit jar to me.  When I was going through my mother’s house after she died I discovered it in the way-up cupboards in her kitchen.  The same place I found the vintage crocus pot.  Again, something I had never seen or used as I was growing up.  I almost didn’t bring it home because it isn’t perfect.  It has a chip or two in the foot.  But, then again, I’m not perfect, so why am I worrying about a lovely jar being perfect?  Especially since the chips really aren’t that noticeable and the jar looks like it is decorated in the Art Nuevo style.

Once I selected the perfect vessel for my Snowball blossoms I had to figure out how to arrange their flopping heads.  And then I remembered something I saw on Pinterest!     WOW!  Do I ever have an easy flower arranging tip for you!

I saw it on Pinterest :: Martha Stewart :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

I had pinned this tip to my DIY Household Tips Board.  But, of course it was Martha or one of her talented associates who originally shared this idea on the Martha Stewart website.

Now that I found the jar to use for my arrangement, it was time to try out the tip and see if it really worked.

One thing that I love about this easy flower arranging tip is that everyone has a roll of cellophane tape in the drawer.  So, it’s practically free.  And with my zero budget, that is a very good thing.  Talk about easy.  Oh my goodness.  How hard is it to stretch tape across a jar opening into the form of a grid?  Anyone can do it.  If you’ve been a reader here for a while, you’ll know that I like simple with extraordinary results.  And this is the best.  Don’t forget to add water to your container.  I filled up the jar before taping the grid.

I saw it on Pinterest :: Super easy flower arranging tips :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

My stems were pretty floppy.  Maybe I should have shown you with forty photos how I arranged them.  But, you’ll just have to imagine that I filled each of the openings in the grid so that the branches were supporting each other in the middle with some blossoms falling to the sides.  Many of the openings held several flower stems.  As the container filled with blossoms, I ended up resting some blossoms against each other to create the mounded look.

Super Easy Flower Arranging Tips -- Snowball Flower Arrangement :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

The arrangement really was quick to put together and lasted very well for a few days.  Until my cat decided that she liked the taste of the blossoms.  One morning I awoke to a big hole in the middle of the flowers.   I left the room to make a cup of tea and when I returned, she was back up on the cabinet with her nose in the blossoms, chomping away.  Yes…chomping…not nibbling.  You would have thought she had a mild taste of catnip the way she rolled around on the floor after she was obediently jumped down.  I guess as much as I enjoyed looking at them…she enjoyed tasting them.  Next year, I will remember that and put them out of her way when I am not around.

Easy Flower Arranging in a Vintage Container :: AnExtraordinaryDay.net

I created a super simple vignette on the little chest in front of my French screen with this jar of Snowball blossoms, the lid from the jar was added to the vignette along with my chubby smiling cat I used in an earlier floral vignette.

The next time you gather flowers from the backyard and want to make an arrangement in something other than a standard vase, grab a roll of tape and voila’! you’ll have something magazine worthy in no time.  Who needs a florist?

This super easy flower arranging tip worked so well for me, I used it to create the small arrangements for the table here, too.

Have you used the tape trick for a floral frog?

What tip from Pinterest was successful for you?

You make my day when you stop by, leave your thoughtful remarks, and even share and pin the posts you like.   Thank you.

Wishing you An Extraordinary Day!

  1. Just beautiful! Our snowball virbernums bloomed here down South about 6 weeks ago. They are one of my very favorites.. I love the grid trick using scotch tape. Love the vintage container. It could not be a more perfect arrangement.

    • Diane says

We had a heavy rain the last day or so and our snowball bushes are looking pretty bedraggled. It was wonderful while they lasted!! And yours were 6 weeks ahead. Oh my…what a big time difference a ‘little’ warmer weather makes.
Thanks for your kind words and for stopping by Mary Lise!
      Blessings!

  2. JaneEllen says

I love the jar you put your gorgeous flowers in. It’s so pretty, looks like it has embellishments on it that stand out. So glad for you to have something so lovely of your Moms. Your flowers are so pretty, I thought they were hydrangeas, obviously I don’t know much about flowers.
I wish I’d thought about the frog tape trick when I brought in some lilacs from our bushes. It was first time the bushes had ever bloomed in 4 years so I was delighted. They didn’t last very long but I sure enjoyed them while they did. Will look forward to next years blooms now.
I’ll have to look into viburnums to plant. Do they need a humid climate or dry? Our climate here in CO is very dry and our ground has so much alkali in it. I always enjoy your blog. Have a wonderful weekend. We can’t afford to do much either but on Monday we’ll go to State park about 7 1/2 miles from our house, there’s a small lake there so our dog can swim, little cold yet for me. Hopefully our daughter/family will join us for part of the day.
    Happy Days

    • Diane says

Thanks JaneEllen! Yes…there is a bit of relief in the design…good eye!
How exciting to have lilacs for the first time in FOUR years!!! That is a l-o-n-g wait!!
You know, I don’t know about humidity for the Viburnum. I’ve lived mostly in Michigan, 11 years in NY, and now in PA, and they do well in each of these areas. But…there is more humidity here. I’m thinking that if a ‘good’ garden center in your area sells them they will do well. The key for any shrub is to make sure that it is well watered and fed from the day it is planted that first year. Too often shrubs fail because they aren’t properly planted and cared for and allowed to dry out at the beginning.
How fun to go to a park with a lake! And so close to your house too. I’d be there all the time!
Hope your holiday weekend is Extraordinary!!

      Thanks Jenna!!
Hope you and yours have a fabulous holiday weekend!

  4. Gina says

Great tip! Thanks for sharing. You came after me on the Love and Laundry party so thought I’d drop by. I’m glad I did! I love when people find ways of doing things cheaper. 🙂 I’d love for you to drop by my site as well. Have a great weekend!
    Gina

    • Diane says

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your kind thoughts Gina!
Best wishes for an extraordinary holiday weekend! 🙂

  5. I have a similarly shaped vintage jar but never thought to put flowers in it. We’ve had storms tonight; tomorrow I will go out and see what I can pick to put in mine, just for fun! Thanks for sharing, Diane!
The tape trick is pretty standard for vases in the floral industry. I worked part time for a florist a number of years ago and we used this a lot. Be sure the edge of the container and the outside is very dry or the tape will come off with the weight of the flowers.

    • Diane says

I’m thrilled that you were inspired Elaine!! That makes my day! Oh I do hope you have something lovely that wasn’t beaten up by the rains and wind. I love floral arranging and have thought it would be a fun job…I know it’s hard at the holidays…but it’s lovely to ‘create.’ And I had no idea it was an ‘official’ trick of the trade. I wish I’d known about it a long time ago. 😀
Hope your holiday weekend is blessed!

  6. Pinky says

I am a floral designer and this is what all florists do everyday:) One of the secrets of the trade. At least where I worked we did. It is exactly what is needed to support flowers and make arranging so much easier. Your arrangement is gorgeous, I love snowball viburnums. XO, Pinky

    • Diane says

Oh Pinky…I wish I had known about this ‘secret’ a long time ago. I can’t tell you how many times I could have done something a bit more creative with that bit of assistance. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. 🙂 It makes my day!

Wishing you an Extraordinary Memorial Weekend!

  7. Jenna says

that’s hilarious, who knew cats liked to eat flowers! You were such a good sport about it!
    Jenna

    • Diane says

Actually my cats like flowers and it can be a major problem for me. They love violas and pansies…which fortunately are edible…and will eat all the blossoms off those if I’m not careful. My Lily actually spent an overnight at the vets from ingesting Dutch Iris….that was not good. But, the cat that chomped on the snowballs really cracked me up. She didn’t nibble…she had a big mouthful!! 🙂

  8. Mel says

Ohhh…then how fitting you had the smirking cat next to the arrangement…and the smirking cat IN the arrangement. LOL Shoulda got a snapshot of the kitty with a mouth full. Oh my…that musta been a moment for the kitty, getting caught with a full mouth.

NEXT time I’m gifted with lillacs, I’m gonna do this one. I simply stuck my face in ’em for a good smell (no, I wasn’t chomping!) and stuffed ’em in the vase.
And with that handy dandy trick….oh, the struggle for a vase to ‘work’ …..will be HISTORY! LOL

    Happy Friday!

    • Diane says

Oh, why didn’t I think to grab the camera? Maybe because I couldn’t believe how she was chomping down like she knew she’d better ‘eat’ fast!
I’m thrilled that this ‘trick’ will work for you, too. Sometimes the easiest things make our days extraordinary. I sure hope yours is today, Mel! [hugs]

  9. This is an amazing tip! I planted a snowball this spring, but won’t see any flowers until next year! Visiting from Chic on a Shoestring. Would love a visit or a follow back! Happy Weekend

Hope your holiday weekend is amazing!

  10. Kim says

WOW!! I love this trick!! I am pinning this for sure!! The bowl you have them in is absolutely gorgeous! I am so inspired. Of course, I do not own anything like this…may have to hit the thrift store this weekend and poke around a bit! Enjoy the holiday!

    • Diane says

I couldn’t believe how easy it made putting the arrangement together, Kim!! Have fun thrifting and making your own!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving you warm remarks!
      Happy Memorial Day & Weekend!

  11. Your arrangement has a very elegant feel to it. I have a green and white ginger jar that belonged to my parents and am looking forward to putting white hydrangeas in it when the blooms come.
    -Karen

    • Diane says

      Oh…thanks sounds perfectly lovely!!
Thank you for you kind remarks, Karen!
      Blessings!

  12. Sally says

Such pretty flowers and I adore your mom’s jar you used as a vase! Thanks so much for the grid idea too, that will be so helpful.

    Happy Memorial Day!

    • Diane says

Thanks Sally! It really was amazingly helpful!
You were so kind to drop by and leave your kind remarks. 🙂
Wishing you an Extraordinary Memorial Day & weekend.

  13. That’s a good tip and they look great ! 🙂 How fast these bushes go to green. Both my lilac and now the snowball are almost done blooming…it’s just been over a week .

    • Diane says

Thank you! Ours have done pretty well, Debra, considering the heavy rains and winds. I’ve noticed a few on my walk that are more protected that are looking terrific. I think it’s the temperatures that are there undoing. It’s nice to warm springs…not 80+ degrees. 😉
Hope your weekend & Memorial Day are Extraordinary!

  14. {Melinda} What a fabulous idea! Why didn’t anyone come up with that ridiculously simple, but brilliant, idea a long time ago?! 🙂 The arrangement looks beautiful!! I adore fresh flowers.

    Visiting from Sharefest!

    • Diane says

Haha! I learned that it’s a floral industry secret! And oh I wished I’d known about it a long time ago! LOL!
      Thanks for your kind words!
Wishing you an Extraordinary Memorial Day!

  15. Beautiful! I love a good bunch of flowers. Are these in the hydrangea family? I just love this tip too. I’ve pinned it, but not tried it yet. I’m also glad someone else has a mischievous cat who loves flowers and plants! 😎 I’m visiting from It’s Overflowing.

    • Diane says

Thank you Christy! No…Viburnum are a whole family unto themselves. Two great families of loveliness!
Oh my cat. I love her, but she has gotten into some big time trouble, she’s something else!!
      Happy Memorial Day!

  16. Susan says

This is an excellent idea! My Mom and I both have snowball bushes that are in bloom right now. I am going to use your tip today. Thanks so much for a wonderful idea.

    Big Hugs,
    Susan and Bentley

    • Diane says

Thanks Susan! Does that mean we should be something lovely on your blog, too?
May your Memorial Day be blessed!

  17. I saw this tip also, but I haven’t had a chance to try it. You arrangement looks amazing! So glad it works and thank you for sharing!

    Stopping by from SITS!

    Pricilla

    • Diane says

Haha! How many times do we see something and not get around to doing it?! It’s the best tip, for me, in a long while.
Thanks for your kind words, Pricilla!
May your Memorial Day be blessed!

  18. That’s a great tip! I’m definitely going to have to use it. My son is getting older and I’m beginning to have a bit more time to think about “decor”. I’m definitely in need of help in that area. Of course, my newly turned teen continues to eat me out of house and home, so frugal tips are so helpful.

    • Diane says

Oh I do hope you have fun making a lovely bouquet for yourself. It sounds like the perfect time to add a bit of beauty to your life. 😉
Wishing you a blessed Memorial Day!

  19. THAT IS BRILLIANT!! I would never dream of taping to create squares!! I will definitely try this. Such a pretty blog you have here….so glad I found you through SITS girls!

    • Diane says

And I never would have either, until I saw it on Pinterest!! LOL! Thank you for your kind and encouraging thoughts Kelly! Blessings for an Extraordinary week ahead!

  20. A florist friend of mine taught me that trick. It is a great way to keep an arrangement within the confines of any container, especially wide mouth ones. She did my nieces flowers for her wedding and all the table arrangements were done in the same manner. Great tutorial!
    Blessings from Still Woods Farmhouse

    • Diane says

You were so lucky to have learned that trick! I wish I would have known it years ago….oh the pretty arrangements I missed. 😉 Thanks for the kind thoughts, Lynda and for stopping by.

  23. Beautiful! I love Snowball Viburnum and have one in my yard. However it bloomed and was gone by mid April here in Northern California. I was so busy with my mom’s 70 Th party, at that time, I never even got around to bringing any inside this year! 🙁 Your arrangement is wonderful! Just beautiful!
    Karen

    • Diane says

Awwww….that’s too bad, Karen. 🙁 And now you’re probably thinking you could have used it to decorate for the party. 🙂

Glad to know, Kathy! Tulips are a bear to arrange…thanks for the tip!
      Hope your week is Extraordinary!

  30. Sarah says

Diane, this is a beautiful arrangement. Using the tape is a great tip. A floral designer shared this with me some years ago. There is a special tape that floral designers use that holds up better and is thinner.
    Thanks for sharing.

    • Diane says

It’s interesting you would mention a thinner tape…it occurred to me *after* I had finished the arrangement. Though I don’t think it matters when the stems are thin. Lucky you to have learned this years ago. 🙂

  31. Such a beautiful arrangement. Thank you for sharing such a great tip!

    • Diane says

How nice of you to say that, Brandi! Thanks for taking the time to stop by and leave your lovely thoughts!

    • Diane says

Thanks Dawn! No worries….I always do. 😉 Just a little behind tonight.

  33. Fabulous tip!! I have seen this done with plastic mesh and with chicken wire, but never with tape. Cool!!
    Krista

    • Diane says

This was sooo much easier than chicken wire, Krista.
      Hope your week is Extraordinary!!

  34. Amazing idea! So simple but it makes such a difference. You don’t mind of I steal it, do you?

    • Diane says

      Thanks Magali!
Steal? It was on Pinterest so it’s not original? 🙂 Of course if you want to feature my post…please be sure to use just a portion and link it back to me.

Haha! I’m thrilled you needed that little nudge. I can only imagine the beauty you will create! 🙂
Thank you for you kind words and always being the hostess with the mostess. 🙂

  46. Hi there! Yes, I’ve used this method before, and it really does help if you need to have some guidance as your arrange. As time went on, my new method became to arrange the flowers in my hand like a bouquet rather than in the vase. It was much easier for me. I arrange in my hand and then drop the bouquet into the vase and tweak as needed. This tape trick, though, is a real winner every time! Thank you for sharing it!!! Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Diane says

Thank you Alycia!!! Flower arranging is something that I enjoy and when I spied this little tip I had to give it a try. Isn’t it fun to have a number of tricks in the arsenal?
It’s ‘nice’ (not) and hot here….hope you aren’t melting in your little corner of this table. 😉

p.s. I tried to leave a comment on the truly elegant tone on tone tablescape that you did this week…but all my clicking produced nothing. I just wanted you to know that I think it ranks as one of the best you have ever done. I love all the details…textures, patterns, and how very refreshing it feels. For me…it’s perfect.

    • Diane says

Someone commented that this is an old florist trick. If that is so….they sure have done a great job keeping it a secret. 😉 Thank you Pinterest for helping spill the beans! 🙂
Thanks for your thoughtful remarks, Kristin!
      Blessings1

  53. Great tip! Beautiful arrangement…I love the snowball blooms. I have never been able to get one (Snowball bush) to grow unfortunately! Thanks for sharing at the Rock ‘N Share! Hope to see you again soon! Blessings, D@TheShadyPorch

    • Diane says

Thanks D! I’m so sorry you haven’t had success with Snowball bushes. Sometimes they just don’t like their spot. I had an Azalea that wouldn’t bloom…so I moved it and threatened it. Every year thereafter it bloomed like crazy. It’s just an idea. After all…a gal needs to have snowball blossoms…yes?

  54. Diane-this idea is genius and one I will be copying for sure!

    • Diane says

So easy, Susan! You will wish you’d known sooner. 🙂
Hope all is well at the farm! Sending blessings your way!

  55. oh what have I done??!!! You are linking back to all these lovely parties, but not to http://www.finecraftguild.com . It’s quite possibly oversight. … Anyhow, I LOVE the flower arrangement. That tape idea, I must try it. Because your vase sure looks fabulous!! Thanks for linking it up with us. A new party will open tomorrow and we’d love you to join in… And remember… please do link back to our party too! Thank you! 🙂

    • Diane says

No way!!! I’m going to go and check right now.
Rose, you know I am faithful to always link up….I am so sorry. 🙁

  56. Very pretty.

  57. Beth says

Your arrangement looks great! My cat always gets into flower arrangements. I’ve taken to putting them up high, or behind closed doors!

    • Diane says

If I put them on the kitchen counter I’m okay…anywhere else…the cats think the flowers are fair game! Haha!!
      Thanks Beth!!

  58. I too love those flowers and the stems are weak compared to the top heavy blossoms. Love the grid method, I must remember that. Love that your kitty found them to be tasty! LOL. Thanks for joining Diann and I at TTF this week.

      Oh Linda….thank you !!
It works so well with those floppy stems.

What a great idea. I would love to grow those here in FL. They are beautiful and I would love to have a bowl full of them on my table right now!

    • Diane says

Thank you Becky!! Oh I hope you find a bush to plant. They are pure loveliness when in bloom!

It is just beautiful and such a clever way to manage those floppy flowers! My cat chomps my African Violet flowers. She doesn’t eat them; she just bites them off.

    • Diane says

Oh Carol….I bet that’s frustrating. I hope she doesn’t stick her teeth in the leaves too. I’ve had a few plants ruined by those feline fangs. 😉
Thanks for your kind words and for stopping by!
      Blessings!

What a fantastic idea!!! I am definitely going to use this for my Hydrangea clippings. Totally one of those “why didn’t I think of that”! But thank you for sharing, because I didn’t see this on Pinterest!

I love Hydrangeas! Have fun arranging them, Karen. Isn’t it good that our “friends” keep us in the know? Ha! Have a great day!
