One of my dearest friends and her husband came to visit for the Thanksgiving weekend.  We had a wonderful time together.  She came bearing a most unusual hostess gift.   A window from one of her previous homes.  It was a window to a sun porch where we spent lots of time together, drinking tea – me and coffee -her, planning, and creating.  An old window is so much fun to play with….but this one is special because of the memories associated with it.

Valentine Window Inspiration - AnExtraordinaryDay.net

I couldn’t wait to decorate with my new window!

My husband helped me hang it up for the Christmas season.  He screwed into the back of the window two pan head screws (they have heads on them unlike a wood screw that has slippery shoulders) about a quarter of the distance in from each end.  Then he carefully and tightly wound heavy picture hanging wire around the screws so that the window hung on two strands of wire.  Next, we placed two nails in the wall about eighteen inches apart and level, but within the distance of the screws on the back of the window.  It was then easy to hang the wide heavy window on the wall.

Rejoice Banner : Vintage Window Art for Christmas | AnExtraordianryDay.net

Rejoice!  An easy to make banner.

For Christmastime I created dark red die cut letters.  Next I selected black, khaki, and ivory 8.5 x 11 cardstock which I cut in half to make 5.5 x 8.5 sheets.  These were then stacked in an offset fashion and glued together.  Then using my handy dandy Crop-A-Dile Punch, I punched uniformly placed holes for the jute, through all three layers, at the top corners, and then threaded jute through the holes to create the REJOICE banner for the window.  It made a pretty dramatic statement.

Fabric Flower Wreath on Vintage Window | AnExtraordinaryDay.net

The window needed something more, so I grabbed a fabric floral wreath.   Originally the wreath was made of felt flowers of different colors depending on the season, but over time I removed the colorful flowers and added Osnaburg fabric flowers, which decorated my tree and window garlands the previous year,  and burlap flowers to give it a new and fuller look.   The wreath was placed a little higher to break the top line of the window to make it a bit more interesting.  Using a piece of ribbon and pins, it was secured via the picture hanging wire on the back of the window. To finish it off I made two little mini swags of fresh greens and pine cones.

Voila!  A Christmas window was born!

 Valentine Vintage Window : AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Christmas passed and it was time to change it up the window for winter.
It needed to be something simple and easy as I can’t spend my time doing a lot of creating if I’m going to pack and keep up the blog.  If you remember I already had on hand some heart garland made by using a Heart Punch, cardstock, embroidery floss, and a glue gun.  So easy.  I took just two strands of that garland that I didn’t need for the tree which I talked about here….and swooped the hearts across the front of the window and attached them with sticky tack.  Don’t you love sticky tac?  It’s a great solution for temporary decorating situations like this.

Voila! A simple and shabby vintage window for Valentine’s Day!  And the best part for me is that took all of 10 minutes to dress it up.
