Is breakfast time crazy and chaotic at your house? We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so doing something to make a breakfast that will stick to your ribs for the day is something we all need to do.     My husband loves a bowl of oatmeal.  It's quick to fix and can be topped with all kinds of yummy toppings. To make those few breakfast minutes more organized and special, I created an oatmeal toppings tray.     It was super fun to do.  Costs very little.  And you can customize it to match your decor or go crazy with … [Read more...]

Officially for me... it's NOW spring and Eastertime. Why do I say that? As I was looking out my treetop window on this cold misty gray morning a robin descended onto a branch and proceeded to begin the preening process.  It was such an ordinary spring sight... except that it's now past the middle of March and this is my FIRST robin sighting this year.  As the sun sinks into the horizon tonight, I'm going to listen for the robin's evensong. I cannot wait!  Truly it will be music to my ears.  There's something about hearing those evening trills.  Even for a few moments... peace descends upon my … [Read more...]

You're going to love all these super easy ideas that you can duplicate, too.     Let's start with the items on the table top. Books are a great way to frame objects that would otherwise seem to be floating in space.  They serve two purposes.  One... to give some additional height and two... to give substance or weight to the … [Read more...]

It's been a while since I have been totally excited about something I've created. This Easter centerpiece and tablescape are my very favorite. I cannot express the happiness I feel every time I walk in the room.     It's the result of a monthly blogging challenge that I do with a group of bloggers to Make Something From Nothing.  It's all about being creative with the gifts and talents our Creator has given us and using what we have in hand.  Some of us have more on hand than others. Mine usually begin with a trip to my recycling bin.     This particular … [Read more...]

I did it!!  I decorated a spot in my home with a Valentine's Day theme using leftovers, something thrifted, something upcycled, a few of nature's elements, and all topped off with a few items from the "dollar" aisle.  It's colorful, a wee bit whimsical, graphic, and makes me smile.  And I had another excuse to use my new roadside rescue side table.   Now, I have to tell you, I didn't plan to decorate for Valentine's Day in such a big way. My original plan was to make a sweater wreath and place it on my new rustic door that I had propped up on my new whitewashed table and create a … [Read more...]

Have you swept your house of Christmas?  I haven't swept everything away.  I have a little silver vase filled with rose hips and white pine that still looks amazing... another vase filled with drying winterberry branches... and two evergreen wreaths festooned with pretty rose hips.  I also have a small tree that's undecorated except for its white lights.  This is my transition from Christmas.  There's something about nature's elements that I don't quickly tire of.  Unfortunately, the wreaths will need to come down this next week as they are starting to show their dryness.  On the upside... that … [Read more...]

In case there was ever any doubt, I LOVE fresh evergreens at Christmas. Did you purchase an evergreen wreath or two for your home and now, the week of Christmas it's crunchy?  It happens.  I wonder how far in advance commercial wreaths are made.  Besides that, if you hang your wreath in a place where it receives the warm air currents and do not spray it regularly, it WILL dry out. One of my friends always buys a wreath on Black Friday to use on her coffee table.  It looks amazing, but come Christmas it's pretty dry. If that's you... you can make a fresh evergreen wreath for Christmas decorating … [Read more...]

I absolutely LOVE using natural elements in my Christmas decorations.  And the best part of using nature's gifts... they're usually free! That's a double win in my book.  Before the leaves even started to fall this year, I knew I wanted to create something beautiful for Christmas with the plethora of oak leaves from the nearby woods and gold spray paint. But, what would that be? I finally settled on making an oak leaf Christmas wreath.     Who knew the humble leaf from a stately oak could become so classy with just a few spritzes of gold spray paint? I had a pretty good … [Read more...]

When I wasn't looking, the lampshade industry made a big change. You might not have noticed. I think it happened overnight.     You see, in the past, I would pick up decorator lampshades at some of my favorite decorating stores to replace the Plain Jane lampshades that came with my lamps.  It was so easy.  Pull the lampshade off the bulb and clip on a new shade.  No DIY skills needed.  I loved that I could get pillows and curtains and chair pads to match, too.  Yay for Waverly. And then things got tight financially and I made do... decorating with what I had in my last … [Read more...]

Cue old black and white movie where the woman of the house greets her man dressed in heels, pearls, and a bouffant hairdo.  Notice how she deftly shoves a magazine at him and says with a slightly affected tone...
