Can I tell you a secret - AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Do you love secrets?

I’m thinking that secretly you do.

Who doesn’t love being an insider and knowing and hearing the secrets behind someone’s success, recipes, DIY projects, relationships, or just about anything?

There is no exercise better for the heart
than reaching down and lifting people up.

~ John Holmes

This quote passed by my screen and I immediately loved it.

And then I immediately tweaked it…

There is no better exercise for the human heart
than laying self down to lift others up.

~Diane Miller

This is my secret.

Now I confess that I don’t do it well, or all the time.  Or maybe even some of the time.

But, when I do it.  My heart changes.  My mind changes.  My day changes.  My world changes.

Laying self down?

Laying self down is hard to do.  We’re pretty protective of ourselves.  Yes?

I’m not saying I do it all the time.  But, when I do, I have discovered that loving and encouraging others is the best thing for my heart.  And for the hearts of others too.   But, I can’t do it well until I lay self down.

Have you had a bad day?  Week?  Month?  Year?

Seriously….I could say that I have had all of those.  But…I also know the antidote to all that negativity is….laying self down.

How often do we see others who need to be lifted up and we turn and put on those reflective glasses that only allow us to see ourselves?

The next time you’re in “one of those spots,” wearing the reflective glasses, take off the glasses and lay self down.

If we don’t lay self down, our worries and cares will overwhelm us.  We’ll be too weak to lift anyone…let alone ourselves.

That’s my secret.

What’s yours?

  1. I was reminded of my need to think about other people and their needs more this morning when I received a call that another sister has lung cancer. She has been sicker than I have been aware of and that makes me sad that I’ve been my own ” stuff” and not in touch with her.Thank you for your post.

    • I know that feeling you have right now, Betty. Thankfully, we can confess it, and God will give us the grace to bring encouragement elsewhere.
I am so sorry that your sister has lung cancer. [[[hugs]]] May she sense God’s love in new and fresh ways as she walks this difficult road.

    • I’m sure you missed this Betty… but Bobbi who commented later mentioned that she would be praying for your sister. She could use your prayers too. 😉 [hugs]

  2. I can’t tell you how much I love getting the email that says “There’s a new post”.
Your words always make me feel better. Some people say the truth hurts, but I believe the opposite.
To me the truth is always better to know even if its not pleasant, I’d rather know the truth.
After reading this post I emailed a co-worker, she is new and struggling a little. i sent her an email saying welcome and I attached some charts I had been working on for myself that I believe could help her to. She was very happy and said thank you so much. That felt so nice 🙂
Have a wonderful day, you always make mine a little better.

    • Tonya… sometimes the truth does hurt…especially when it dings our pride. Yet, other times, it’s just what we need to get us back on track. More than anything… I think it’s our attitudes and how we choose to receive the truth that is the deciding factor.
I can only imagine your co-worker going home tonight and telling her family how wonderful her co-worker Tonya is and what you did. There is no doubt that she is going to be feeling more confident and positive about her new position. You rocked it girl!! High Fives!!
Thanks for sharing your story. And thanks for putting feet to the words you read. You truly blessed me!! [[hugs]]

  3. bobbi duncan says:

Oh, Diane, the truth in those words! I so love that quote. I am about to go in for a test to see if a found lump is bc….I am afraid of hearing the results because I had cancer elsewhere 34 years ago and know what anxiety I may be facing. However, after helping out an elderly neighbor organize her cabinets today, I thought, “My heart feels so much lighter knowing someone was made happy today. If I can do this every day, my mind would be on happier things than worry over what may come to pass”. It’s amazing how much we get in return when we lift up others. Betty, I sent up a prayer for your sister. May God bless you all during this difficult time.

    • Bobbi… I will be praying for you that the lump is benign. And that the God’s peaces that passes understanding will guard and keep your mind in Christ Jesus! [[hugs]]
