31 Extraordinary Days to Be... AnExtraordinaryDay.net

Have you ever been a secret encourager?

Several years ago the church I attended had a special year-long event for women.  It was called “Secret Sisters.”

Usually there was an annual gathering where the “Secret Sisters” of the past year were revealed, a decadent dessert was served, and names were drawn for new secret sisters. It was a popular event.  And though I generally didn’t participate in many women’s events at the church, I never missed this one.

I had the best of times blessing the woman who was my “Secret Sister” for the year.  I carefully wrote notes with my less dominant hand so they wouldn’t guess me by my handwriting and regularly sent something in the mail.  I made little gifts and went to great lengths to deliver them secretly.  I prayed for these women, and at the end of the year, they were very special ladies in my life.

Day 22 of #31Days :: Be a Secret Encourager ::  DL Moody #Quote on doing good. ::  AnExtraordinaryDay.net :: #EncouragingWords

This quote from D. L. Moody would be an extraordinary model to live by:
“Do all the good you can, to all the people you can,
in all the ways you can, as long as you can.”

It occurred to me that one way to be encouraging is to secretly encourage those in our midst.

How fun to send a gift card for a coffee at Starbucks to the coffee lover with a sweet note. Why not make or purchase something and leave it on the door handle or another safe place to surprise your recipient.  How easy it would be to send out simple inexpensive greeting cards every day for a week.  That’s just for starters….I’d love to hear your ideas.

Wouldn’t it be fun to choose to bless someone secretly for a week, a month, or even a whole year?

Day 22 Challenge:  Decide to secretly bless a co-worker, a pastor, a friend, or a relative.  Take time to learn the things they like and even their challenges.  Have fun being a secret encourager.

Be a Secret Encourager…

    Hi Diane
I just want to say you are a great encourager, and I really appreciate your blog. The ideas you share are so down to earth and real. I hope that somehow I can be a Secret Encourager too :). Many blessings to you and your family. Hugs 🙂

    • Diane says

Babette…I so appreciate your encouragements. 🙂 Truly…you have no idea what a wonderful encourager you already are. 🙂
      Big Hugs!!
      ~Diane

  2. Love this post! Did I miss the many ways that others were going to share?

    • Diane says

      Awww…thanks!!
I’ll run that next week Stacey. Still trying to get more input. Thanks for the reminder…I meant to add that to the post. 🙂

  3. Karen says

    Diane –
Your posts are inspiring – they speak to me each day – look forward to your thoughts, pictures and scripture.
Wanted to share that this quote -“do all you can…” was made by John Wesley not D. L. Moody. It may have been used by Rev. Moody in a message, but the original quote belongs to John Wesley.
    Have an extraordinary day!!

    • Diane says

Karen, your words truly bless me. 🙂
I got the quote from Christianity Today….I guess we both just got a chuckle out of that one. 🙂
Have you heard the saving that you quote and reference the first time, then quote the second time, and the third time…you own the quote? Maybe Moody did that. I doubt it of course…but this has tickled my funny bone. 🙂
May you have An Extraordinary Day!

    • Diane says

I just ran across this today: http://vitalpiety.com/2013/04/29/wesley-didnt-say-it-do-all-the-good-you-can-by-all-the-means-you-can/ Now to find the real source of the quote before I go to all the work to change the image. 😉

  4. Mel says

I can do this one, easy peasy!! Fact is, I’ll do this twice and trade out for being hospitable. No? LOL. Fine!
    😛
Seriously–I adore doing kind things and not being found out. It’s the challenge to be sneaky … I’m goooooood at sneaky! LOL. And I like the idea of mailing cards for a week straight….very much. Yup. Gonna steal that one!

    • Diane says

Did I read, “Easy Peasy”????? 😀
You’ll laugh, but as I was writing out that challenge, you came to mind and I pictured you sitting on your couch with a bunch of handmade cards ready to go out “incognito.” Isn’t that funny? 🙂 So steal away!!!

  5. I absolutely love this idea! It would be a great way to interact not just with other women, but with co-workers, neighbors, even in a school setting with teachers. I think I might try doing this for my kids teachers since I’m more active at the school now and do it at a time when I know they are going to have a rough or overly busy week.

    • Diane says

Alecia…being a secret encourager for your kids’ teachers is a fabulous idea. Just think of the ripple effect of that act of kindness. You Rock!!!!

  6. I had forgotten about the Secret Sisters idea…what happy memories. I am so glad you chose encouragement as a topic. We can never be reminded enough (ps, visiting from SITS)

    • Diane says

It sounds like you had a wonderful Secret Sister experience, too! 🙂
Thanks for popping by and introducing yourself, Christa.
      Blessings!!
      ~Diane

  7. Beautiful post and beautiful series!

    • Diane says

      I really appreciate that Pamela. You’re a blessing. 🙂

  8. Tammy says

Beautiful photo and quote. Very inspiring.

    • Diane says

Awwww…thank you sooo much Tammy!!! 🙂
      Blessings! 🙂

  9. Gwen says

Ahh. We used to do Secret Sisters at church and I had so much fun!!! A new spatula. A package of thanksgiving napkins. Why I could do this in my neighborhood. A bouquet or easy, buy a $2.50 pony pack of flowers at our locally owned nursery. They come much bigger! Then put them in an inexpensive plastic bowl. They can even be spray painted to have texture. Why, I have soil, small low plastic color bowl pots, and wouldn’t even spending $7.50 and doing three be fun? Make some tall, narrow and others flatter. Leave at their door with a skewer and note threaded through. Happy day to you! From a neighbor, glad you’re on the street
Hmm. I have flowers made of plates. I could give that. No $ but just a thoughtful hello.
Thank you for your challenges to keep me thinking outside of myself

    • Diane says

You are so creative Gwen! I love how you take an idea and make something truly wonderful of it!! Have fun and keep being a sweet blessing to all you touch!!
      [hugs]

  10. Love this idea to bless someone secretly. Over on my blog. I’m sharing ways to help others on a weekly basis. I am realizing more and more what a blessing it is to encourage someone else.

    • Diane says

You are so right!! It’s down right fun!! 🙂
Wishing you an Extraordinary weekend, Melanie!!

  11. Oh I love this idea! I love encouraging others by promoting them and the things they do, but I’ve never thought about just randomly sending them cards of encouragement, or just leaving lovely things at their door. This is a really great idea, and I’m looking forward to your post with all the great ideas.
Sharing as I feel sharing the love, or encouragement in this case, is empowering.

    • Diane says

Thanks Ricki!! When I take time to do these things, it does something wonderful for me too. It’s just plain fun!! 🙂
Thanks for your kind and encouraging thoughts, too!
      Wishing you an Extraordinary week!
      ~Diane

  12. Great idea! We all need encouraging and also to give encouragement! This would be a great project for a month of Thanksgiving! Thanks for sharing at TTF!

    • Diane says

      We sure do, Linda!!
I love your idea for the days leading up to Thanksgiving!! 🙂

  13. patsy says

Wonderful wonderful idea!!! 3000 likes! Patsy from HeARTworks

  14. Kathy says

This was really timely. Someone came in at work today and I could tell that she needed some encouragement – I did a little something for her that I hope blessed her. Great post. I am delighted that you shared with Home and Garden Thursday,
    Kathy

    • Diane says

Kathy, I’m pretty certain that anything we do out of love is a blessing. What a wonderful opportunity you had today. 🙂

  15. I used to do Secret Sisters at my former church too! I think the blessing is twofold: for the recipient and for the giver. Makes me want to get started on my own secret encouragement mission!

    • Diane says

You know, Alison….I think that being the giver might actually be the best part. It really is encouraging to receive thoughtful cards, notes, and gifts. But…isn’t it just a ton of fun to make it all happen, too?
Hope you have fun on your ‘next secret mission.’ 🙂
